A tremendous battle between Jimmy McRae and Julian Reynolds was the highlight of the Rally Marketing Mid Wales Historic Stages, round four of the 2007 Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship over the weekend (23/24 June).
While McRae/Andy Richardson took overall victory, David Stokes/Guy Weaver retained their overall title lead with a measured drive to victory in category 2 and Patrick Watts/Elgan Davies won category 1.
Category 1
"I'm trying hard, but I don’t want to go off," reckoned Watts as he started the second day. After the opening three stages on Saturday afternoon, the Tiger was only 13s clear of Philip Atkinson/Simon Coates, who were pushing on as hard as ever in their Lotus Cortina.
However, a strong run through the 10-mile Hafren North stage on Sunday morning helped Watts build his margin. "That was a bit of a wake up," said Watts after the stage that received widespread acclaim. By the time the cars headed back to Newtown after Sunday's six stages, Watts was 1m18s clear of the rest.
Atkinson took second in category 1 and victory in class B4 and was pleased to head Dessie Nutt/Geraldine McBride home by nearly half a minute. The Porsche 911 crew lost time on the last stage on Saturday after the water splash in Sweet Lamb. "It was all the way up the hill before we could see anything," said Nutt. Fourth went to Neil Calvert and Arlene Cookson (Lotus Cortina), while a stirring drive from Graham Waite/Gill Cotton ended when the Volvo Amazon suffered a front hub failure. H&H Classic Auctions has enjoyed considerable success with Lagondas in recent times, and the lovely dark green 1936 LG45 Tourer entered for last week’s (June 20) Buxton sale continued the trend when it was knocked down for £88,000 – way over its knowingly conservative estimate.
Perhaps British Racing Green cars are in vogue at the moment, for the similarly coloured 1956 Jaguar XK140 Drophead Coupe also considerably exceeded expectation by making £41,800, despite having undergone a conversion from left to righthand drive at some stage in its life.
There was a whole range of desirable sports cars in this sale and the relatively rare and extremely pretty c. 1970 Abarth-Simca created particular interest - eventually selling for £17,600. Examples of the original Lotus Elite always cause a stir when they come to market too and the gorgeous Special Equipment version on offer rightly sold well at £26,300. Another head turner was the red 1954 Triumph TR2 that is believed to have covered no more than around 50,000 miles from new. It made £15,960. The pick of a very fine selection is the 1929 Grand Prix Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Super Sport, registration UV 819. In common with the 1750 SS (UU 79) that H&H sold for a record-breaking £503,000 in March, this much rarer 1500 SS was entered for the 1929 Irish Grand Prix by the UK concessionaire F W Stiles. Also in common with the 1750 SS, it won in the hands of former Russian Imperial Guard officer Boris Ivanowski, who took victory in the Saorstat Cup with it on the first day. The car finished a fine third overall for the meeting. £380,000-420,000.

The 1970 Lotus 72 chassis R1 made its debut at the Spanish Grand Prix in the hands of works driver John Miles. Despite lacking the suspension updates of the sister car of eventual 1970 World Champion Jochen Rindt, Miles achieved 7th place in the Dutch GP and 8th in the French round. The Lotus was then updated, renumbered R4 and provided to privateer Rob Walker to run for double World Champion Graham Hill. Once retired from works duty, it briefly passed to Swiss ace Jo Siffert before being purchased by double World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi for display purposes. £220,000-260,000. On Sunday 24th June, icon of British motorsport, 3 times World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart teamed up with US legend Al Unser Snr, as part of the star studded Lola line-up at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The Lola pairing of Stewart and Unser formed a strong driver partnership for the Mecom Racing Team in 1967. Based out of Houston, John Mecom began his first racing team in 1962. Within two years of its creation, his team was ranked among the top in the US, and Lola’s victory at the Indianapolis 500 in 1966 cemented their status around the world. Lola used this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed as a fitting occasion to reunite Jackie Stewart and Al Unser Snr, who both drove a Lola Mecom T90 on the prestigious ‘Hill Climb’.
Sir Jackie Stewart commenting from Goodwood, “It been an honour to team up with Al again and jump back into the Mecom Lola. Once we fired it up there was no looking back. The Lola looked and drove as beautiful as it did 40 years ago.”
Stewart added, “Al was a real master and good friend. It’s been a wonderful reunion for Lola and Goodwood.”
In 1966 Graham Hill became the first Englishman to win the Indianapolis 500 driving the Mecom Lola, however, it was his team mate Jackie Stewart who stole the show in the ’66 race, almost triumphant on his Indianapolis debut. Victory was denied by a broken scavenge pump while leading the race with only eight laps to go. Never the less, the ‘Flying Scot’ won ‘Rookie of the Year’ honours after comfortably leading the race by almost 2 laps, before having to retire. Maranello, 23rd June 2007 - A worldwide unique relay, with 103 stages through 42 countries on five continents: after 145 days of travelling the baton with the 60 symbols, representing the 60 most important events in the history of the brand, came back home to its birthplace, to Maranello.
Today, accompanied by more than 1,000 cars from Ferrari - certainly a record - the baton officially arrived at 12 o'clock on the Fiorano race track on board of a 125S, the first Ferrari ever built, with the two Scuderia drivers, Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa, behind the wheel, followed by 52 Spiders - representing each market where the Prancing Horse is present these days.
10,300 cars from Ferrari, with every model and from every era, participated in the journey around the world, while the "Ferrari 60 Relay" was welcomened in each of the countries it passed with a gift dedicated to Ferrari - such as a Pelè-autographed Brazil football shirt or a jade interpretation of the Prancing Horse from China and a porcelain version of Michael Schumacher's racing helmet from Germany, signed by the former driver and handed over in Berlin. The 58 gifts are to be put to a charity auction and the money will be donated to children's hospitals in Modena and Bologna. The 15th "MAROC CLASSIC - La Route du Coeur" is heading south With a land area of more than 650,000 square kilometres, Morocco is larger than France. The road network, so perfect for the drivers of classic and collectors' cars, is nevertheless less comprehensive than the French one. The number of stages suitable for participants in the "Classic" is not unlimited and the options for route variations are few. Despite this, the rally organisers make it their business to find new routes each year, combining the pleasures of exploration with those of driving.
The 2008 event will be epochal. Divided into seven legs between 15 and 22 March, the route starts from the royal capital, Rabat, and finishes as always in Marrakech. The total distance of 2,240 kms, divided by halts at Tangiers, Fez, Erfoud and Ouarzazate, includes 17 "Regularity Tests on the Road", with at least 60% of roads not used previously.
Organised around a north-south axis, it is notable for traveling further south than ever before on the "Classic", heading all the way down to M'Hamid, well below Zagora, where a bivouac has been arranged (five-star, so don't worry): an exotic change of scenery is a definite promise!
