The School of Library and Information Science has opened SLISLife. This is a new social networking site where SLIS students and faculty and staff and alumni can be more of a community.

- Job Search Blast Off resources now available on Blackboard
Twice a year SLIS offers the Job Search Blast Off workshops with Career Center counselor Laurie Morgan, with active discussion boards and live webcasts. During the rest of the year the Job Search Blast Off materials remain available to students and alumni, though the discussion board is closed.

- Invitation to SLIS Presentation: "How to Get Published"
This workshop looks at the two major print arenas for publication in the LIS field: scholarly and professional books and journals. The difference between "scholarly" and "professional" media is described, and the various approaches to both venues are discussed. Guidance is given for contacting editors prior to submission and preparing initial e-mails and query letters for optimum response. Both financial consideration (fees for articles and royalties for books) and intellectual property consideration (copyright ownership, right of first publication, etc.) are described.

- SLIS in Second Life - Free land grant program
Starting this Spring, the school is setting aside a large portion of the "island" for use by students for personal projects. They will own plots of land totaling 512m and not be required to pay regular land prices.

- SLIS Colloquia Webcast: Doug McDavid: Virtual Libraries - Real People
Doug McDavid is the Executive Consultant with IBM’s Global Business Services and Almaden Research Lab. This presentation describes the business and learning to be done in virtual worlds, based on McDavid’s compelling interpersonal interactions including a serious approach to Second Life and its applications for global working collaborations. The presentation includes concepts such as the "presentation of self in everyday life," the surprising degree of the social nature of the experience with colleagues and peers, as well as meeting people outside the IBM community such as in the library, education and arts communities.

- SLIS Convocation/Graduation Information
The SLIS Convocation will be held in San Jose on May 17th, at Parkside Hall. It will start at 1:00 pm. A reception will follow the ceremonies.
The SLIS Convocation for Fullerton will be held on May 18th. The location details will be posted next week. It will start at 1:00 pm. A reception will follow the ceremonies.
There is a $25 processing fee for all graduates. Your first guest ticket is free. Each additional ticket is $20 or $25 at the door. Children under 12 are $10 may be purchased in advance from the website, or at the SLIS Office. Children under 18 months may also attend, free of charge.
More information and the ticket form will be posted on the SLIS website by the end of February.
