  • 'Using all our talents' - Jim Knight
I believe all of us here can agree that everybody should have the best possible chance to succeed and make the most of their talents. Partly, this is a moral or ideological conviction we share – the intrinsic value of social justice and the importance of social mobility in building a fair, happy and successful society. But increasingly, there’s an economic imperative too. We’re living and working in the shadow of a skills challenge that threatens our long term standing in the global economy.

  • 'ASCL Annual Conference' - Ed Balls
We already have a high quality school workforce that has made huge progress. But we need to set our ambitions even higher to deliver the very best for our children and keep pace with the best performing education systems around the world. • 'The Future for Family Learning' - Beverley Hughes
All of us know that parents are a child’s first and potentially their best educators. So what we’re doing to improve family learning in the broadest sense – to make it a fun, vibrant and lasting feature of family life – is absolutely key to raising achievement levels and narrowing the gap.

  • 'Debate to call for strengthening families, community cohesion and social action' - Andrew Adonis
we face manifold challenges and the Government are not complacent about them. However, families and young people are mostly succeeding. Most communities in this country are safe and positive. Continued partnership between government and the wide diversity of civil society is generally a force for progress to tackle the problems that we face. We all have a part to play in forging further progress. Today’s excellent debate has focused attention on how we can do so and I end by once again thanking the noble Baroness for making it possible.

  • 'Team Every Child Matters' - Kevin Brennan
Like a good parent, the majority of children they don’t need – or necessarily want – professionals looking over their shoulders all the time. But they need to know that services are there for them when they need them: There when they’re ill. There to teach. There when young people, for whatever reason, can’t talk to their parents. The state is not here to replace parents (except in the most extreme circumstances), or to interfere in family life. It is there to provide the support, guidance and professional expertise that children and families need.
