A long procession of graduates, administrators and faculty in gowns took to the quad on a windy evening for the 117th Advanced Commencement ceremony on Friday, May 18.>br<>br<The graduates and those who have made great contributions to the University and the community were celebrated and congratulated on their accomplishments.

- University awards Herz medal to Reed High School grad
Deanne Leonard of Sparks, Nev., received the University of Nevada, Reno's Herz Gold Medal today during Commencement ceremonies on the historic University Quadrangle. Leonard has completed her undergraduate academic career with a degree in Psychology and a cumulative grade point average of 4.0.

- School of Medicine holds academic hooding ceremony
Commencement ceremonies for the University of Nevada School of Medicine Class of 2007 were held this afternoon at Lawlor Events Center in Reno. The 52 graduating students celebrated completion of their medical education by receiving their academic hoods and reciting the Hippocratic Oath, which reaffirms their commitment to the medical profession.

- ROTC cadets' goal of Army career becomes a reality
With right hand raised, now 2nd Lt. Michael Settembre completed his commissioning oath and began his career as an Army officer. Settembre, who will officially receive his baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering on Saturday the 19th of May, reflected on his five years as a student and ROTC cadet.

- Sen. Harry Reid to highlight commencement ceremonies
This year's undergraduate ceremony will be highlighted by an address from U.S. Senator and Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. The Herz Gold Medal, the University's highest academic honor, will also be presented Saturday to the top undergraduate of the 2007 class.

- College of Education Friends host fifth annual golf tournament
Friends of the College of Education recruited a field of 32 foursomes to "Tee It Up for Teaching," May 12, at Lakeridge Golf Course, including Gov. Jim Gibbons who played in the fifth annual golf tournament that raised $33,000 for student scholarships.

- University cartographer recognized for preserving local history
Jack Hursh has a great appreciation for Nevada history. As a third generation Nevadan, he has dedicated much of his spare time to preserving the heritage of Truckee Meadows. The city of Reno Historical Resources Commission recently recognized his efforts and presented him and his colleagues Loren Jahn and Jack Sutton with the Advocate award. The award, for Reno residents who have helped promote local history and heritage, was presented May 10 at Reno City Hall.

- ASUN appoints editors and new college of science senator
The editors and managers of the Associated Students of the University of Nevada's publications and campus radio station were recently appointed in the last Publications Board Meeting. The ASUN Senate also selected the new senator for the open College of Science seat.

- Bayona tapped to be Mexican epidemiology director
Manuel Bayona, director of the University of Nevada, Reno's School of Public Health, will become the Director General of Epidemiology for Mexico in June 2007. Bayona will work out of Mexico City and will handle epidemiological issues for the 32 Mexican states at the federal level.

- Hydrology doctoral student awarded research grant
Shahnewaz Mohammad, a doctoral student in the Graduate Program of Hydrologic Sciences, recently received a prestigious honor in the professional field.>br<>br<Mohammad was awarded a research grant from the Geological Society of America for his research in the Humboldt River Basin. He has the honor of being among the 20 awardees of the 474 applicants was chosen to be funded.

- Genetics professor receives honor from Lili Claire Foundation
University of Nevada School of Medicine professor and chief of the Genetics and Dysmorphology Division of the Department of Pediatrics, Colleen Morris, M.D., was recently honored for her work enhancing the lives of children living with neuro-developmental disorders. The Lili Claire Foundation honored Morris with the Compassion of Care award during their annual benefit dinner and concert held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas on April 28.

- Reynolds School receives $3.17 million endowment
During their lifetimes, Paul and Gwen Leonard generously supported the University and the Reynolds School of Journalism. Their daughter, Rev. Jackie Leonard, has fulfilled their final bequest to establish two gifts within the journalism school. The $3.17 million endowment will fund the Paul A. Leonard Chair in Ethics and Writing in Journalism and the Paul A. and Gwen F. Memorial Scholarship.
