  • Someone Pause This Whirlwind that is My Life!

Ok, so life is a little hectic lately.

    Lately?

Yep - that's my story and I'm stickin' to it. The class trips are finally finished, spring concerts are over, both GS troops have (finally!) partied out and finished. Olivia's class party is Thursday and Moira's is Friday. T-ball is almost complete too. HOORAY!

Does cheering make me a bad Mom?

    Oh HELL no it doesn't!

I can't WAIT to sit at the beach and do nothing but relax. I have finally got myself a beach badge and I intend to use it quite frequently.

Long Beach Island - here we come!

  • Holy Crap!

Bear tries to pull N.J. Girl Scout from tent at Pa. camp

    ::link::

An 11-year-old New Jersey Girl Scout got a rude awakening early Sunday when a bear tried to pull her out of her tent at a campground in the Poconos.

Celeste Tietz of Franklin Township, Warren County, managed to grab a tent-support pole and slide out of her sleeping bag as the bear was tugging at it. Tietz and four other girls slept in bags on cots.

"I was sleeping and I woke up because I fell on the floor," Tietz said. "Then something started pulling me towards the front of my tent and tried to pull me out."

After Tietz slid out of the sleeping bag, she jumped into a fellow Scout's cot and the girls started screaming for help. Tietz's mother, Cathy, and other Scout leaders said the bear then moseyed around their campsite, approaching other tents.

The Scout leaders were able to load the campers, about 15 of them, into a van and took them to the camp's mess hall. "It was a scary situation," troop leader Terri DeTore said.

Shortly after midnight before the 11-year-old's bear encounter, DeTore said she heard a ruckus coming from a neighboring camp site.

Because of the bear encounter, Camp Mosey Wood in White Haven, Luzerne County, has been closed to tent campers for the next two weekends, according to Ann Meredith, chief executive officer of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania.

"Everybody will be using cabins and there will be no outside cooking," Meredith said.

Bears can be attracted to camp areas by food, toothpaste and, as Meredith put it, "pretty-smelling shampoo." Campers and Scout leaders receive education and warnings about bears when they register for camp. Bear warnings are also posted.

"Bears are a fact of life," Meredith said. "We're living in their habitat."

Cathy Tietz said there was no food out at her camp before the Sunday morning incident.

Meredith said a warden with the Pennsylvania Game Commission set a bear trap at the camp. A message left for game commission officials was not returned.

Camp officials also are reviewing emergency procedures.

"We'll use this as an opportunity to further educate Girl Scouts about bear safety," Meredith said.

  • Today is....

    Class trip day!

The entire first grade (all ten of them) are going to a farm today. I feel so very sorry for any animals that they encounter through the course of the day. I am one of two chaperones for Olivia's class. I am looking forward to the trip although not the 45 minutes bus ride to the farm. Loud, noisy, and smelly - ahhh - three key ingredients in making this a fantastic trip. Oh, let's not forget sweaty or dirty or, God forbid, pukey

    Wish me luck!

  • A New Favorite

Man vs Wild on the Discovery Channel.

    from the website:

Bear Grylls is a seasoned adventurer who served with the Special Air Service, a special forces unit of the British army, where he was trained as a survival expert. His experiences include climbing Mount Everest, crossing the freezing North Atlantic Ocean in a small, open boat and climbing a Himalayan peak described by Sir Edmund Hillary as 'unclimbable'. He has been places and done things that would defeat most normal people. But now, he is up against something completely different.

In each episode of Man vs. Wild Bear strands himself in popular wilderness destinations where tourists often find themselves lost or in danger. As he finds his way back to civilization, he demonstrates local survival techniques, including escaping quicksand in the Moab Desert, navigating dangerous jungle rivers in Costa Rica, crossing ravines in the Alps and surviving sharks off Hawaii.

    Another bonus -

  • Back to Normal

I'm very happy to write that things are back to normal and we are all ok. Again, I am very touched by all of you who wrote or called to check on us. Thank you.

With the enormous size of the fire, all that was damaged were about 15 homes, several cars, boats, and 3 trailer homes were completely destroyed. Of course, quite a few people were evacuated but all in all, no injuries at all. I've updated my Flickr account with some more pics, if anyone wants to check 'em out.

The girls had school today but I kept them out anyway. Apparently, there were over 300 kids absent from the schools today! Lots of people got evacuated and didn't even get home until late last night. The girls were exhausted and I decided to keep them home to rest. Besides, Olivia had to go to the pedi for a burst eardrum. The poor kid, she was in quite a bit of pain last night. Now, it's just leaking. I know - gross!

Well, off to try to stuff these little buggers into bed. G'night!

  • This is it

We've just been informed that it is a mandatory evacuation.

    Good thoughts..please.

::edited at 6pm:: The evacuation was not mandatory. So, we chose to stay, along with our neighbors. It looks like it's going to rain, according to the forecast. The sky is dark but it's hard to tell if it's from the smoke or the weather. I hope it freakin' pours.

  • More pics

Check out my Flickr page for some photos I was able to take of the smoke from yesterday. The fire is still ongoing and causing quite a bit of a mess here in my town.

Thank you for all who have expressed your thoughts and prayers. They are so appreciated.
