  • Edinburgh win on home slopes
    A record turnout of over 1300 students gathered in Edinburgh from across the UK for the annual British Universities Dry Slope Championships, aka BUDS ‘06. Huge numbers entered for the race events, with 550 skiers competing in the Slalom and Giant Slalom (GS) races, and 190 in the Boarder GS.

  • Bristol get the Varsity blues
    Varisty, the biggest night in Exeter’s sporting calendar certainly lived up to its reputation at the beginning of November when, in the most dramatic of fashions, Exeter came from behind to clinch a 28-27 victory over South West rivals Bristol with a penalty in the dying seconds of the game.

    World University Championships gold medallist Jonathan Schofield won four gold medals to help Loughborough to overall victory at the BUSA White Water Racing Championships on the River Washburn, North Yorkshire.

  • Bath dominate badminton Championships
    The University of Bath produced winners in the men’s singles, men’s doubles and women’s doubles at the BUSA Badminton Individual Championships in Nottingham. Harry Wright was the man in form for Bath, winning the men’s singles as well as partnering Matt Hanson to success in the doubles.

  • A Focus on Netball and Other Sports in the South of England
    The Southern England Student Sports Association (SESSA) is an organisation that was first established in 1961. It organises over 35 different competitions including leagues, one-day events and tournaments for a whole host of sports including football, rugby and netball, as well as some of the less obvious like badminton and rowing. It runs some of the largest leagues, including its football league, which comprises of 20 divisions with 116 teams in total, providing a competition for over 1,300 students.

    The swimming team from Loughborough University held on to the overall title at the BUSA Short Course Swimming Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, but this year’s victory was much closer than the dominant display twelve months ago.

  • Hat-trick for Ryan as Leeds Met run riot in Cheshire
    BUSA Football, Premier Men’s North November 15 2006 MMU Cheshire 0 Leeds Met 6 Leeds Met Carnegie travelled to MMU`s Alsager Campus to complete the halfway stage of the Northern Premier league season with the intention of building on the previous week’s fine performance at home to Lincoln, where Leeds Met had scored five unanswered goals. On a blustery and overcast day Leeds Met set off in top gear forcing MMU onto the back foot in all areas of the pitch.

  • Oxford edge past Cardiff
    The Oxford Greyhounds narrowly defeated a talented Cardiff University side in an exciting game at Iffley Road on Wednesday November 15. On a damp day Oxford opened the scoring with a try through England Students wing Jonan Boto after 17 minutes. Fly-half Tim Catling ably converted and added a further penalty ten minutes later to give Oxford a well deserved ten point head-start. Just on the verge of half-time Cardiff replied with a try and conversion by wing Tom Bowks. The second half saw Oxford adding a further two penalties through Catling to give them a commanding lead of nine points going into the final five minutes.

  • Exeter come up against unbreakable Loughborough defence
    BUSA Rugby League, Premier North November 15 2006 Exeter 0 Loughborough 20 Loughborough lived up to their reputation by preventing Exeter from scoring in a physical match in the UK’s rainiest city. The first half was a very different affair to the second - they were both oozing with hard hits and knock-ons, but in the first half the game could have gone either way.

  • Imperial dominate Small Boats Championships
    Students from Imperial College won nine of the twelve events at the BUSA Small Boats Rowing Championships on the River Trent at the end of October. Newcastle University also enjoyed success, emerging victorious in the three races that Imperial did not win.

  • Sheffield and Manchester win Hill Climb team titles
    Tom Bailey from Sheffield University won the BUSA Cycling Hill Climb Championships, leading his university to victory in the men’s team competition. Bath’s Nicola Duggan was the fastest woman to complete the course, but it was Manchester University who were the overall winners in the women’s event.

  • UWIC fight back to deny local rivals
    BUSA Rugby Premier Men’s South A October 18 2006 Cardiff University 22 UWIC 27 UWIC FOUGHT back from 11-points behind to prevent an upset against newly promoted Cardiff University. It was the first game of the season in the BUSA Premier Men’s South A for both of the sides from the Welsh Capital and the two teams struggled to settle early on.

  • Brits fade in Spain after promising start
    The British crew led by Cambridge’s Jonathon Pinner dominated the opening day of the World University Match Racing Sailing Championships, but they failed to capitalise on the impressive start and finished in 5th position. The 11 crews all raced each other in a round-robin competition over the first three days of the event at Palma de Mallorca in Spain, and Pinner combined with brother Matthew (Bristol), Tom Heywood (Cambridge) and Chris Carden (Bristol) to win all five matches on the first day - beating Japan, Australia, Germany, Sweden and Italy.

  • Bronze for Britain as China dominate Championships
    Sheffield Hallam's Robert Adcock and Bath’s Hayley Connor combined to win a bronze medal in the mixed doubles at the World University Badminton Championships in Wuhan, China. The host nation dominated the Championships in mid-October, winning five gold medals and two silver medals from the six events. Chinese Taipei collected the majority of the other medals, winning one gold, two silver and six bronze medals.
