  • Our Favorite Bitches

Mom•Logic picks our top family flicks featuring Fido.

    winningdog.jpg

This week, the American Kennel Club announced it’s annual list of top 10 most popular dogs breeds. And as they have been for the last 17 years, Labradors were voted “Top Dog.” We're dog lovers in the Mom•Logic office, and we all have our own opinions of what's the best. One thing we can ALL agree on: We love any dog that’ll entertain our kids while we get dinner made. That said, here’s our countdown of the best family dog movies. (NOTE: We’ve left out well-worn classics like Old Yeller and Lassie to make room for the new breed of dog films. (Let us know if we omitted your favorite.)

    5) Milo & Otis
Narrated with by the super-talented Dudley Moore, this funny and touching film follows the adventures of a Pug and kitten who become fast furry friends. A great lesson for kids! Proves that if mortal enemies dogs and cats can get along, they can play nice with their sister. Keep Reading...

  • Okay, My Son's Not Perfect

Julie's Mom•Logic: When my 6-year-old son acts up in front of our friends, I freak out!

    med229045.jpg

"Saturday night, my hubby and 6-year-old son had a "guys' night/sleepover" with our best friend and his 4-year-old son. They went to a testosterone-driven Monster Truck Rally, stayed up past midnight, then crashed at our place. The boys woke up before 7, which pretty much spelled disaster for the rest of the day. You see, my son needs a full night's sleep, or he is an absolute nightmare behavior-wise. With 10 hours sleep, he is still a sometimes spirited child—but on 7 hours, he turns into a different person. His hearing seems to go completely, because he doesn't listen to a thing my husband or I say. He impulsively does insane things, like push the button to shut the garage door when our friend's son is standing directly under it. Stuff like that. I don't know about you, but I am always stressed about my kids being on best behavior when we are around our friends' kids. Keep Reading...

  • Preschool vs Dating: Which Sucks More?

Part one of three: Could finding the right preschool be harder than finding a husband?

    preschool3.jpg

When one Mom•Logic Mom started searching for preschools, her older son was 18 months old. She begged asked strangers on the street, women in the checkout line, and pretty much her entire neighborhood for thoughts on the best schools in town. After several school visits and comparing philosophies and requirements, she discovered the "best" preschool is actually a personal choice. As important (if not more) than the curriculum, is how well the school fits with a family's needs. In fact, her list of 15 schools quickly dwindled down to three based on potty training, age cutoff, and schedule.

We called Dr. Michelle Nitka, licensed clinical psychologist and preschool guide, for tips on finding the right preschool. Don't waste time on that preschool search until you check out her tips...  Keep Reading...

  • Why Me?

Miscarriage may be common, but the pain and suffering is unique to every woman.

    200320996-001.jpg

British singer Lily Allen suffered a miscarriage this week after returning home from a vacation with her boyfriend. It may be celebrity news today, but miscarriages happen every day to expectant Moms of all ages. But knowing that it's common often times is not enough to comfort a woman going through it. Half the Moms in the Mom•Logic office have experienced the loss, in some cases more than once. Each has her own story and her own loss. For the warning signs and stats about miscarriage, Keep Reading...

Dr. Phil Regrets Speaking Out About Britney Visit
After spilling the beans about his private hospital room meeting with Britney Spears, Dr. Phil has finally admitted he should have kept his mouth shut. While he says his recent visit with Spears was appropriate, McGraw told his audience Thursday during a show taping that he had second thoughts about his decision to speak publicly about Britney. Good, because we had second thoughts about him doing that, too, five minutes after he spoke out! Duh.

    Love at First Sniff
In this week's Time magazine, researchers uncover the science behind love and attraction. One study concludes that men are drawn to women who are ovulating and tend to be “more loving and attentive” to their fertile mates. For women, desire begins with a kiss. Testosterone is found in men’s saliva, which can increase a woman’s attraction to her mate and even make her more open to intimacy. Note to our hubbies: More foreplay!

  • Mom•Logic Hits 'Cloverfield' Premiere

    cloverfield.jpg

Julie's Mom•Logic: Here's what happened when I attended this monster of a movie premiere.

Yesterday, I made pasta for my kids, put on a very high pair of heels, and headed to the Paramount lot in L.A. for the premiere of the giant monster movie Cloverfield. So did Lindsay Lohan, Ashlee Simpson and Ashley Tisdale. Watching Lindsay pose for the ocean of flashbulbs is an experience hard to understand. The photographers yell. The celebrities pose. More yelling, more posing. Wait, that sounds like a game my kids play running around the house.

As I watched the cast of the film walk down the gauntlet of photographers I wondered Keep Reading...

  • 'Til What Do Us Part?

How far would you go to keep your man from going to jail?

    prisonhusband.jpg

Marine Cpl. Cesar Armando Laurean is still on the run and the key suspect in the brutal murder of 20-year-old pregnant Marine, Lance Cpl. Maria Frances Lauterbach. Laurean's wife turned information over to authorities 24 hours after finding out about Lauterbach's death, giving her husband enough time to flee. What took her so long to turn him in?

What makes a woman put her husband first even after being betrayed? In 1992, Mary Jo Buttafuoco was shot in the head by her husband Joey's 16-year-old mistress, Amy Fisher.

What was even more shocking than her full recovery was her decision to stand by her man. We think we'd hold a bit of a grudge. Wouldn't you?

  • Now Playing: 'Hannah Montana' Madness

Note to Moms of tweens: Montana movie tix are going fast...

    hannahmontanablue.jpg
Just when you thought that finally it would be easy to get a piece of the Hannah Montana action—guess again. Tickets are already selling out for some showtimes of the movie version of the sold-out concert that we all tried to get tickets for already. Movietickets.com reports they are selling thousands of tickets every day for the film, which opens Feb. 1 and will only be in theaters for one week. One week?! You're killing us, Disney.

Remember when the concert tickets sold out? The insanity surrounding that event was so intense, one Mom we read about let her daughter submit a phony letter chronicling her father’s death in Iraq, all in the name of winning free tickets, and we don't need to tell you how wrong we think that is.

If your are game for tracking down the few remaining tickets try Fandago.

  • Runaway's Mom: 'My Kids Are My Life'

Her son, along with his 13-year-old girlfriend, have been missing since Saturday.

    bilde.jpg

This morning, we told you about the two Michigan teens—Gage, 15, and Hannah, 13—who ran off together, and the nationwide search for them. We talked to Gage's Mom, Mary Wismer, 44, to find out more details.

"Gage has been missing since last Saturday, and I can’t believe he hasn’t called me yet. I have been a stay-at-home mom for 15 years. He’s a mama’s boy, and we have a close relationship. He talked to me about everything. In the note he left me, he said he would try and contact me in two months. It seems like he knew he’d be gone for a while because he took nine pairs of jeans, and he packed lots of stuff including his Xbox 360."

To hear more in Mary's own words, including her concerns about Hannah's bipolar disorder and where she thinks Gage might be headed, Keep Reading...

  • Holy Moly! Bounced from Church?

Some churches across the country send the message: We'll take your money, but not your crap.

    nochurch2.jpg

According to a Wall Street Journal report, pastors of churches large and small are joining a growing movement to excommunicate parishioners for sins ranging from cheating, drunkenness and stealing to gossip, missing church, and criticizing leaders. Um... is it just us or does that seem a little un-Christian of them?

What's next, getting ejected from Mass for looking at your watch repeatedly? Are they going to boot little old ladies for unwrapping their hard candy? Kids for being bored? This news will certainly keep us from heading to confession this weekend.

How do we teach our kids to have faith when the powers that be are so judgemental? Is this sending the message that we need to achieve perfection to be accepted?

  • Calling All Sexual Predators

New software keeps tabs on your kid's cellphone activity.

    girltext1.jpg

The Internet and the mall aren't the only places sexual predators are hanging out. They're also communicating with kids via cell phones. Seizing the opportunity to make mobile phones a safe place to chat, software companies have stepped up with products for monitoring teen's text messaging and photo transfers. One company, eAgency mobile offers Radar, an online service allowing parents to view all text messaging and image transfer activity though a secured Web site. This might seem like overkill, but if you have suspicions your child is being contacted inappropriately, the software could be a lifesaver.

One problem. What do the text messages say? Like any emerging technology, kid text messaging has its own language, one that parents aren’t hip to (Proof: We use words like “Hip”), and some of it, when in the wrong hands, can center around sex and drugs.

Keep reading for a list of 10 text/im messaging acronyms all parents must know.

  • Happy Meals Making Moms Unhappy

Florida parents surprised by McDonald's "reward" for good grades.

    50806761.jpg
Update: McDonald's has decided to stop sponsoring Happy Meals as rewards for children with good grades and attendance records in elementary schools in Seminole County, Florida, reports The New York Times.

When kids in some parts of Florida brought home their report cards this week, some parents were shocked to see Ronald McDonald staring up at them from the manila envelope it was in. It turns out McDonald's offers free Happy Meals as a reward for good grades to elementary school students in nine Central Florida counties. But many parents were upset by the pressure to take their kids to McDonalds to claim this reward.

McDonald's says the free meal is nutritious if kids make the right choices: Chicken nuggets, apple slices with caramel dipping sauce and low-fat milk are 375 calories and 13 grams of fat. Yeah, right—our kids never want fries or a Sprite when they go to Mickey D's... Hmm... Do you think this is a good policy?
