  • Doctor Fish Spa (Garra Rufa)
Doctor Fish By Grace Lin What is doctor fish ?! It is neither maggots that eat away you dead flesh literally nor is it like leeches or bees that can cure some aliments by either sucking away like a vampire or committing suicide on your body 'kamakaze' style. These fishes are small little chaps that nibble on your dead skin cells by scrapping their tiny mouths against your skin, sort of like exfoliation, the natural way. One of the two strains of fishes that we use in our spa, Garra rufa have been known by multiple common names such as Kangal fish, Doctor fish, Reddish log suckers and so on. Kangal fishes originate from the Middle East, in rivers and springs of Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Turkey and Syria. They are 9-12cm bottom-dwelling fishes that live in waters ranging from 15oC-28oC. Surprising, they are able to live in thermal waters of 37oC as well. They generally feed on algae at the bottom of the river beds or zoo plankton, microscopic organisms that thrive in rivers and feed on even smaller microscopic organisms. They are a much researched species of fish in Turkey and is postulated to aid in healing of skin diseases and disorders, one of which is psoriasis1-3, where a cure is yet to be found. This fish supposedly simultaneously releases some unknown enzymatic secretion and dithranol, a component of dermatological creams to enhance the skin condition by normalizing its pH and helps new skin cells regenerate a little faster than usual. The only side effect of this is Laughter and Beauty in the native form. Spa of this kind is a fad now and has been seen and reported in Turkey, China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and here in Singapore. Although by far, we are the most convenient and well priced spa, at Nibbles, it is our duty to ensure that your health and skin will be of the best condition after the spa and nail services you have used. We have specially customized our disinfectants with high quality materials which are neither pungent nor drying to the skin, and yet could disinfect still. In addition to our well trained 'doctors' and staff, our highly maintained water filtration systems and monthly water testing protocols will prevent an endemic of skin disorders in our spa pools.
