  • Conserve Mobile Phone Battery Power
The phone display draws the most power from the battery. Constant lighting up the display drains the battery.

Bluetooth is another juice sucker. Turn it off when not in use.

If your phone has both UMTS (3G Technology) as well as GSM, try switching it to GSM to conserve power.

Most people like to play games on our phones, this is another factor that causes battery power to run out fast.

Another factor is the received signal strength. Try to make or answer calls in areas where the reception is good. You can tell if the reception is good by looking at the antenna bars on the display. The more bars signify better reception.

Last but not least, your battery condition can be also one of the causes of battery drain.

  • Your Mobile Phone is wet ?
Many of us have had the bad experience of liquid damage to our cellphone.

Be it dropped into the toilet bowl, water spilled on it, exposed to rain, etc.

The first thing we do after we picked up our wet phone is we dry the outside and then we pressed the power on button.

Water and Electricity cannot come together, switching on the wet phone causes high current to short-circuit the electronics of the engine board.

What this means is that your chances of recovering the phone is now zero!

What you should do instead is this :

    1. Remove the battery

    2. Remove the sim card

    3. Remove the Memory Card

    4. Send to the nearest Authorized Service Centre for repair immediately!

The SIM card and Memory Card contains electronics too. That is why it is advisable to remove them.

And for God's sake, please do not place the phone near any liquids, use it in the rain or even put it in your breast pocket.

Hopefully, this is in time to save your wet phone.

  • Back up or Lose it forever
PAIN is losing your mobile phone without any backup for the contacts, calendar, pictures, etc.

How many of us do backup our important data in our phones? It is our responsibility to do so, not the manufacturer's.

Imagine the pain of trying to get back all your contacts and keying them one by one back to a new phone? And the loss of all those important appointments and meetings that you have keyed into the calendar?

    Please do this immediately :

    1. If your phone supports memory card, buy an extra one

    2. If it doesn't, learn how to back up the data from the user guide

There are few ways to do a back up :

    1. Back up to Memory Card - If your phone comes with a Memory Card, please learn how to do the back up. Then, buy another similar Memory Card and back up once more. Keep the 2nd one at home.

    2. Back up to Computer - Most Mobile Phone nowadays allow you to back up data using an additional software (e.g. PC Suite for Nokia phones). Basically it allows you to synchronize or back up the data on your phone to your PC. Thus your PC now has a back up of your data.

Personally, I prefer to synchronize my Contacts and Calendar to my Microsoft Outlook and back up my pictures to my PC. What I did in addition is also I print out a hard copy of all my contacts just in case my hard disk crashes.

Backing up to Memory Card has one disadvantage. If you lose your phone you need to buy a similar phone in order to restore the backup data.

Don't say that you are not technically inclined or it's too complicated.

No matter which method you choose, DO THE BACK UP NOW !

  • Organize Your Life with your Mobile
Three features can help you to organize your life with your Mobile Phone.

    1. Clock
    2. Calendar
    3. Notes

The Clock function allows you to set alarm.
Do you know that once you have set the alarm in the Clock function, you can power off the phone? At the designated alarm time, the phone will power on and sound the alarm.
In some phones, it even allows you to Add City so that you know the time of the City you added. So if you travel to the capital of Vietnam (e.g. Hanoi), you can add Hanoi to the Clock function and the local time will be displayed. Great for travellers !
As for the Calendar, you can set Meetings, write Memos, key in Anniversaries and even add To-Do items. No reason for you to miss any of them.
Notes is another great function for you to write anything especially if you do not have pen and paper with you. Writing on paper can be easily lost as compared to writing in the phone.

Tip : Put all the 3 functions in one folder and name the folder as : Organize

  • Mobile Phone Cameras aren't just for fun

The resolution of integrated cameras in Mobile Phones has ranged from VGA all the way to even 5 Megapixels!

Great for taking pictures of beautiful scenery, self-potraits, friends, etc.

Of course, I use my mobile phone camera for the same reasons too.

On top of that I use it for several other purposes.

Ever parked your car in a huge carpark of a shopping mall? And then you don’t recall where you parked your car after you are done shopping?

What you can do is always remember to take a picture of your car with the car park lot number after you park your car.

And if you bring your kids to the shopping mall, take a picture of each kid before bringing them into the mall.

If you lose them, at least it’s easy to tell the management or security or info counter what clothes they wear and how they look like.

Minor car accidents happen, right? The phone camera can also provide proof of damage to your car to claim insurance.

Of course, a digital camera is better than a mobile phone camera.

But how often do you carry a digital camera with you compared to a mobile phone?

  • This could save your Life !!!

In your own country, you do know the local emergency numbers.
When you are in a foreign country, do you know theirs?

If you have a GSM phone, you can call an International Emergency Number from most countries.

The number to dial from your GSM mobile phone is 112.

Call this number only when it’s a real emergency !

In some countries, this number is routed to the local emergency number.

Most GSM phones can dial 112 calls even when the phone keypad is locked or when the phone is without a SIM card !

Do remember this number or better still program it to button number 1 whenever you are in a foreign country. So in an emergency, just press 1 for help in a foreign country.

It could save your life or even someone’s life in an emergency.

  • Buttons 2 to 9 of your Mobile
As promised, here is the post on Speed Dialling.

Buttons 2 to 9 of your mobile phone can be programmed to 8 frequently dialled numbers of your choice.

Before you start to do this, you need to check if your phone supports this feature.

Most mobile phones do not turn this feature on by default, which means you have to turn it on first before programming.

In the picture above, the number 2 is programmed to Home, 3 to Office and so on….

However, there is one little problem.

How do you remember what you have programmed to numbers 2 to 9?

What I did is this :
I write what I programmed on a sticker and paste it on the inside of the battery cover.

In the beginning, I had to refer to the list frequently. But after a while, you can remember it without the list.

Actually if you put some thought into it, you can order the numbers by age, by name, etc. This will make it even simpler to remember which number for which person.

Once you get used to this feature, you will find dialling from the phonebook a chore. Well, at least for the 8 frequently dialled numbers.

For my aged parents, they no longer need to remember my mobile number.

All they have to do is press the Button number 2.

And my child; press 1 to call Dad and 2 to reach Mummy.

Try it and let me know if it makes your life easier.

That’s all…… until my next post

  • Button number 1 of your Mobile
American Express says : “Don’t leave home without it”
It refers to our personal mobile phone as well.

The mobile phone is so important that it has become a part of our life.

Most people use it solely for communication; voice and text messaging.

For me, I use it in many other ways to improve my life.

What I would like to share in my first post is how i use :
The Number 1 button of your mobile phone

For those who are not aware, the Number 1 button on the mobile phone is used for voice mail retrieval.

Voice mail is the voice message your caller leaves behind in the voice mailbox when they cannot get through to you.

Press and hold the Number 1 button now.

Some of you will get a box on the display prompting for the voice mail number.

Some phones might dial to the pre-programmed voice mailbox of your service provider.

Think about this : how many of you really use the voice mail function of the phone?

Wouldn’t it be better if you program the voice mail number to your most frequently dialled number instead?

I programmed the number 1 button of my aged parents’ mobile to my mobile number. This way, all they need to call me is just by pressing the number 1 button of their mobile phone.

Depending on which number you program, it can serve different purposes.
This will save you time from searching through the whole phonebook list.
Do note that this is not the same as Speed Dialling which will be my next post.

I hope you find this useful….. until the next post
