    What a Week for Atari

Well the week started off on a good note for Atari has they now have former Sony Worldwide Studios President Phil Harrison, now Infogames has made an offer to buy all commonly held stock in Atari. They offered them a $0.02 percent per share making the final price at closing a total of $1.68 a share from $1.66 this move would allow Atari to stay on the NASDAQ and be listed, they have been threaten in the past of being delisted from the NASDAQ. This move would also take the company private, allowing major, company-wide decisions to be made more quickly and easily than they could in a publicly traded entity. Atari did state "The offer is non-binding and there is no assurance that any transaction will occur," considering that Infogames pretty much owns Atari this would just give them complete control of Atari.

    THQ jumps on Wii board

Wii balance board seems to be getting a lot of attention now of days from THQ, THQ has plans on making a Cheerleading game that incorporates the Wii balance board into the game. Meaning you will assume the role of a cheerleader, where they must learn "the latest cheer action and top routines," with the ultimate goal of becoming cheer-squad captain. THQ also promises a highly customizable experience, with players able to define the look and style of their character as well as create their own cheers. This will be the first US developed game to use the Wii balance board and only the second non Nintendo game to do so. I think this may be a bad idea making a cheerleading game, I can only imagine it now little girls starving themselves just to play a game damn that’s messed up.

  • Microsoft and Sony Getting Into Bed Together?: that would be like mixing honey and milk
Yup, it would.  Honey is good, milk is good (does a body good), but together? I don't know.  It would take some getting used to.

Several sites posted this tidbit, and for clarification, I went to the source.  Financial Times posted it online today, and you know if Financial Times says it, it might as well be golden.

And if you're still thinking 'why?'  It's all about the money baby.  Yeah, the 360 with a Blue-ray would be more competitive against the PS3, but Sony would still have to sell Microsoft the Blue-ray player.  Has the light gone off yet?  Good.  But if you still don't believe, check it out for yourself.

  • Poor Wittle Jack Thompson: EA won't play nice
    Good for EA I say.

A quick recap.  Recently Thompson offered his services to EA to help take over Take-Two.  Today, Thompson gets his response.  No.  Hmmm, doesn't get much clearer than that.

"EA's Mariam Sughayer politely turns down the offer, saying, "In response to your offer to assist in the proposed acquisition of Take-Two, we would strongly prefer that you not get involved in this matter." Sughayer goes on to cite Thompson's past behavior towards gaming, "including false claims about content in [EA's] games," as a source of enmity, rendering any possible collaboration "impossible.""

You know what?  This totally just made my day.

  • Echochrome Proves Gameplay Is King: Things are NEVER what they seem
Like anyone else with an internet connection this morning the first thing I did was download the Echochrome demo from the HK PlayStation Store. 10 short minutes later my mind was blown but not in the OMFG what just happened kind of way. But more in that subtle conversational way, as in, "You know what OMFG what just happened".

The demo provides a quick tutorial of the "laws" that govern the gameplay in Echochrome followed by a dash of levels that have you test out those laws in pretty simple way but just enough to make the puzzle snob in us want more.

What really hit me on a very high concept level was that these designers kept Echochrome this simple and it still remains effective. Echocrhome is a classic gameplay driven game and since lately the focus has been on the more story driven games, I was surprised that it resonates so much with me right now. Check it out, maybe the US store will get it today as well since the demo is really in English.

  • Gearin' Up For Wiiware: survival horror puzzler from WayForward Technologies
Hmmm, huge fan of puzzle games and I'm obsessed with survival horror.  I think this could be good.  Think Puzzle Quest meets Alone In The Dark.  The name of this game if LIT

WayForward Technologies are the guys who brought us Shantae for Gameboy Color; and are now developing LIT exclusively for Wiiware.  The game follows Jake who is trapped in a high school (nightmare) which has been taken over by evil baddies, all while looking for his girlfriend, Rachael.

Seems like some exciting things are coming to Wiiware.  This game sounds like something that could appeal to a variety of folks.  And the character sketches are extremely cool.

  • Ooooo, Ziff Davis Media Files Chapter 11: but will continue operations normally
There were rumors back in August 2007 that some restructuring was needed to help with Ziff Davis' debt (guys who own 1up.com and Electronic Monthly Gaming).  But don't worry, they have a plan.  The bankruptcy is voluntary.  The shareholders have set aside some moneys ($24.5 million) in order to keep operations running on a normal level (i.e. keep those employees paid).  They hope to emerge from this by the end of this summer.

This is good and bad news.  Sucks to have this on any record, business or personal.  But sometimes this is the necessary evil.  On the flip side, this is good, because I think we'd all hate to see 1up.com be gone for too long.

  • Another TV Show Crosses the Line: and becomes a killing spree video game
How many people watch "Dexter"?  I don't, but many people tell me I should.  If you haven't seen it, I'm sure you'll like it.  Its about this forensics guy who's idea of vengeance is killing the criminal himself.  Neat!  It is a great idea for a show, and could possibly be a great idea for a game.

Showtime and Marc Ecko Entertainment are teaming up to create a video game that will stick close to the story and appeal to hard core gamers.  Hmmm, we get to play a Dr. Jeckyly/Mr. Hyde character?  Yeah, I dig it.  Still working out the nitty-gritty, so there's no details when the game will be out; but they are planning on making it a cross-platform game.

  • I Like Baseball .. I Must Be American.: MLB 08 The Show continues the tradition of really decent portable baseball
When I approach a title for review I don't like to bring up the past when there are sequels involved. But since sports titles from year to year have served more as iterations than TRUE sequels. I have never really been a fan of the sports titles, don't get me wrong, I play them .. all the major titles but I never really play them for that long. MLB 08 has done two important things for me as a portable gamer. It made me stop playing Patapon with the occasional dash of Wipeout Pulse, and it has made me forget that I was playing a PSP since I previewed the PS2 version first.

12 hours later I feel confident in saying that MLB 08 on PSP makes enough improvements on graphics and animation to put it right up there in terms of being a true sequel. Like I mentioned before, this game looks as good as its PS2 counterpart. The major difference between both titles are the load times between games. The load time on PSP is quite significant and can sometimes take 2-3 minutes on a PSP-2000. However, it's a scenario of a one time load and you go through the entire game without any major pauses at all.

As a simulation, the additions are feeding right into the hearts of the fans. I would need to play the game for another 40 hours or more to really be objective about the Road to the Show mode, but everything it does for the created player perspective and career options are awesome and will keep me playing the Road to the Show.

I was not particularly in love with the sound track selection but since I could load my own music from my Memory Stick, that didn't factor in so much. Would have been nice to just have it autoload the tracks to a playlist for us lazy gamers ;). However I do understand that maybe there are some things you don't want to listen to while you playing baseball that can fall into an auto set-up. The sound is the best the series has put out. But what really got me was the "localization". I set up an exhibition game between the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox at Wrigley Field, which I commute past every day. While the game intros are being set up they really capture the local rivalry in a way that really connected. Not to mention the accuracy of the of both Wrigley Field and the architecture surrounding it. Still have to see if they are real buildings .. anyway guys .. the localization on PSP is pretty good. The crowds .. not so much but hey .. can't have it all .. I just wish they where not billboards .. even though they are animated.

I am not sure what needs to happen with a sports game to blow my mind but I do know its possible because I have felt it in the past. Things are different these days though and although MLB 08 is a good game but I didn't get totally blown away. Perhaps it was a function of the learning curve or the lack of reward when you smash one out of the park. It is however a really decent simulation and on the PSP there is no rival.

So this week if your thing is not busting skulls in ancient Greece, or your all Pataponed out or you just want to reconnect with America's favorite passtime on the go, pick up MLB 08 The Show.

  • Okami Wii Release Date Changed to April 15: Maybe the only reason to like tax day
God how I hate taxes and how April 15 is always looming around the corner. But this year, there is a little happiness on this day-the release of Okami. The color palette of this game is enough to brighten anyone's day. So here's looking forward to Okami and hopes that you get lots of money back.
