- Bring on the Future of TV Ads
Backchannelmedia recently conducted a survey to better understand the wants and needs of today's U.S. consumers. The survey revealed that 40% of consumers would participate in interactive television offers such as the one Backchannelmedia has developed. Backchannelmedia's belief is that the traditional method of television advertising is becoming less and less effective, especially with DVR technology that allows people to fast-forward through all advertisements that air during their favorite programs. So, they have created an interactive opt-in television advertising model that will more efficiently target consumers.
How does it work? With the simple click of their current remote control consumers can forward a product or content of interest that they see on TV to an e-commerce site. Market Wire, in an article regarding the new technology provided the example of a consumer who is watching a musical performance by a popular artist and decides that they want to buy the song. The consumer would be able to simply forward a link to download the song from a digital music site.
Backchannelmedia's patent-pending technology will allow consumers the convenience of shopping from their TV without being annoyed by disruptive ads. The recent survey conducted shows much hope for this technology; 60% of the 2,288 participants indicated that they would click on the TV advertisements to have coupons sent to their email, and the survey "projects close to 43 million early adopters out of the 196 million U.S. daily television viewers." (Nielsen Media Research)
When can we expect to see this innovative advertising method? Beginning the second quarter of this year Backchannelmedia will launch a closed-air trial on a select few television stations. Depending on the outcome of the trials, we will see when this technology will hit television sets across the United States.

- Direct Response Advertising: No one is immune
Many people believe that they are not influenced by the hundreds of advertisements they see everyday. However, evidence seems to indicate otherwise. Direct response advertising is a $250 billion dollar business (something that no one could ignore). Pioneered by Bob Francis, creator of "8-minute Abs", DRM is one of the most effective marketing tools today. With the major objective of going to retail with a product, one needs only three criteria to succeed with DRM.
1. A product to appeal to a wide-range of comsumers
2. Low cost of production
3. Made as an offer no one can refuse (2 for 1...)

- Digital Future for TV
People thinking of buying a TV this holiday season may want to consider whether they will want to watch free, over-the-air programming. On Feb. 17, 2009, all television stations in the US will stop broadcasting in analog and will begin broadcasting in digital format only.
What does this mean for us consumers? If you buy or own a TV without digital capacity, you will need to obtain a digital converter box to continue to receive free local programming. Beginning in 2008, the Federal Government will offer a max of two $40 vouchers per household to be used to purchase converter boxes. If you have a digital TV you don't need to change anything. Note that a high definition TV is not the same as a digital TV - you need a transmitter to get the digital signal (or a converter).
The federal government began this program to free up some of the broadcasting to be used for public safety transmissions. Digital television will also offer less interference and better picture quality.
To apply for a converter box coupon, you can call 1-888-388-2009 or visit dtv.gov. The coupons are available on a first come, first serve basis until the program reaches $890 million total.

- Electronics are Best Bought Online
According to the November Annual Electronics Issue of Consumer Reports, shoppers looking for electronic products received better prices and a better selection from online suppliers than they did from walk-in retailers.
Customers also reported that another advantage of shopping online is that they were not coerced into buying extended warranties. Consumer reports advise that extended warranties are generally not recommended, however, three fourths of consumers end up purchasing them because they feel forced to do so by sales people.
With the holiday season quickly approaching, avoid crowded stores and cold weather by purchasing your gifts online for a better deal and selection!

- Woman Scams QVC out of $412,000
A 33-year old woman from Greensboro, N.C. named Quantina Moore-Perry, pleaded guilty to a Philadelphia federal court on Oct. 25 to scamming QVC, a home shopping network, out of more than $412,000 in 2005.
Moore-Perry discovered a glitch in the online ordering system of QVC that allowed for her to order products and quickly cancel them, while still receiving the product in the mail days later and for no charge. She would then place the items on eBay and sell them to the highest bidder.
She has agreed to forfeit her earnings to government authorities and she faces up to three years in prison. A sentencing date is still pending.

- Small Business TV
The Harris Poll released a new survey yesterday stating that 80% of adults in the United States are online. This percentage has been steadily increasing. In 1995 only 9% were online and in 2000 they were at 57%. Adults are now spending on average 11 hours a week on the internet.
This increase could not come at a better time for Wi-Fi TV. They are launching a Social Internet TV website today. This will enable even small businesses to have their own interactive TV Station. Companies can post as little or as much content as they would like. This just provides another way to stay connected as a company, to your clients, and to feature new products. All they need is a web cam or camcorder!

- Strict Guidelines for Infomercials
Just because a retailer has an amazing product for a great price, it does not make it easy to sell. Many retailers face legal problems when they put their product on air or online. Retailers can face litigation and even jail time for copyright infringements and false advertising claims.
Many times, retailers will put their product on the air without substantiating claims about the abilities of their products. These are often low budget projects who do not take the time to cover themselves legally. They often times find themselves facing steep fines from the Federal Trade Commission.
Television stations are no longer held liable if they are given the information and sources from the retailer, and they usually require liability insurance as well. However, stations are now keeping a closer eye on products that seem to make outrageous claims and promises.

- Hulu.com - An Alternative to YouTube
NBC and FOX have just launched a test version of a new video streaming website that will compete with YouTube and other popular video sites. Hulu.com will play full length television shows as well as movies for free. The site is supported by online advertisers who wish to promote their product alongside prime-time television and popular movies.
YouTube is at a disadvantage because their current website hosts many unauthorized video clips. Viacom Inc. (who owns Comedy Central, VH1, MTV, and others) is currently suing YouTube for 700 million dollars due to copyright infringement.
Hulu.com will allow users to embed episodes or clips onto their own blogs, websites, or even to send them in emails to friends. The final version of Hulu is projected to be available within a few months.
