  • Lamination
    Lamination is a plastic film which is bound by heat and pressure around a printed sheet for protection.


  • In-line
    In-line is an efficiency process that does all printing (printing, folding, gloss varnish, etc.) in one pass.


  • Imposition
    Imposition is the process of arranging pages in sequence and right side up. This step is usually done by printers.


  • High Resolution
    High Resolution is an image that has a correct amount of sharpness to replicate on paper without loss of quality. Images are measured in the number of dots per inch, where web images are 72 dpi and print images are 300 dpi.


  • Grain
    Grain is the direction of the majority of fibers in paper. Folding paper against the grain may cause it to crack.


  • For Position Only
    For Position Only is an image used as a place holder for the final one. Usually a low resolution of the same image.


  • Fulfillment House
    Fulfillment House is an alternate name for a mail house. A mail house does an array of mail related services like: list preparation, labeling and addressing.


  • Folded Paper Dummy
    Folded Paper Dummy is a mock-up of a job folded and trimmed like the final product.


  • Foil Stamping
    Foil Stamping is a method of printing that applies shiny foil to a project when it is stamped with a heated plate.


  • Finishing
    Finishing is the term used to classify trimming, folding and binding as one.


  • Engraving
    Engraving is the method of printing onto a hard surface using a cutting method. Most common application is a plaque.


  • Embossing
    Embossing is the method of impressing an image or text into paper to create a raised surface. If there is no accompanying ink it is referred to "blind embossing".


  • Dot-Gain
    Dot-Gain is when halftone dots print larger on the final product than the proofs. This occurs when the paper absorbs more ink than desired, and can cause dark blotchy images. Alterations can be made to an image file to reduce the loss of quality. A newspaper is an example of where dot-gain can be seen.


  • Digital Printing
    Digital Printing is any reproduction from an electronic source.


  • Digital Pre-press
    Digital Pre-press is the preparation of your project in digital format. This digital file is usually outputted from design software.
