  • FON and Mac

We’ve just released the beta of FON access point software for Macs. We are targeting a mid-April release date. If you would like to test please e-mail Albert. The new software turns any Mac into a Fon access point! It allows you connect your Mac to a 3G, EVDO or HSDPA connection (please make sure your carrier allows this!) and offer FON WiFi to those around you.

You can then regulate the amount of bandwith you share to insure your own connection remains strong. The bandwidth you share will then be free to Linus FONeros and cost 3 euros/dollars the first day and 2 euros/dollars thereafter for others. As a Bill you can take 50% of it! This could make you a very popular person in a lot of places!

PS - it was hard not to use the term iFON in that post!

  • FON Wi-Fi Connection Manager

Lot's of people have been asking about automatically logging onto FON access points. I don't have a release date to share with you but we have signed an agreement with Spotigo for our FON Wi-Fi Connection Manager. This will allow Foneros with window devices and Symbian smartphones to detect and connect to FON access points automatically!

  • FON & Zing team up!

I’ve been waiting for this announcement! I’m a big fan of the Sansa and now Zing and Sandisk have teamed up to bring us the Sansa Connect (I can’t wait to get my hands on one – it’s on display at CES!). You may be wondering why I’m posting this on the FON Blog. The answer is FON and Zing have teamed up. A FON & Zing bundle will be available bringing Zing users into the Fonero community. More Foneros, more wifi, more music. This rocks!

  • Invitation Program in Europe and USA – Free Foneras!

Starting December 21st Foneros in Europe and the USA can invite their friends to join FON and receive a free La Fonera! If you have an active Access Point you are eligible to participate in our “Fonero Gets Fonero” campaign.

Martin Varsavsky, founder and CEO of FON, regards the "Fonero gets Fonero" campaign as a gift to the Community:

"It is Christmas time and we want to thank our loyal FONeros and reward their trust and commitment by offering them the opportunity to give new community members a Christmas present. At the same time, it is they who decide which friends they most want to surf with. In this way, they enlarge the community with FONspots in sought-after locations."

It’s easy and your friends get a La Fonera mailed to them free!

Update: In Europe you will receive 1 invite at a time. When your friend activates La Fonera your next invite will appear!

  • Swedish, Finnish and Danish Foneros - free La Fonera

Between now and Christmas Swedish, Finnish and Danish foneros can get their foneras for free at FON!

When you access the site it will state the cost is 29.95 euros. However when you go to the Swedish, Danish and Finnish shops the fonera is FREE for those countries. No credit card information is required. We do ask you to promise to be a good fonero, it is a promise, not a contract. All you need to do is agree that you will keep your fonera on or else pass it on to another fonero who says he/she will.

  • La Fonera Shipments

I want to apologize to the over 20,000 Foneros who are waiting to receive their Foneras. We are shipping out 5,000 this week and another 5,000 the week after. We then expect another 10,000 to go out in 3 weeks. We're manufacturing Foneras as fast as we can but so far demand has exceeded supply.

Thank you for your patience, we expect to be caught up with shipments in about 3 weeks.

  • La Fonera Subsidy Ending

The price of La Fonera will increase to $29.95 in the USA and 29 euros in Europe by the end of next week. We’ve been subsidizing the Foneras for $5.00 or 5 euros but they cost us about $28.00. Because we’ve been very successful in seeding the Fon movement we are planning to end the subsidies shortly. If you’ve been thinking about joining Fon, now is the time!

  • Sharing is FON . . . And here’s more to share

One of the most exciting and challenging aspects of building the FON Community is creating an absolutely unique business concept through direct, open and transparent processes. FON actually blogs and publishes its statistics, dilemmas, and strategies in a manner in which its Foneros and the general public can essentially experience FON’s business decisions in real time. FON discloses information that few companies would ever dare to share with the outside world. Unlike other companies, FON thinks sharing is fun. Foneros share, and FON shares. Sharing is FON.

And here is some great news to share, hot from the press . . .

Today we will cross the 20,000 activated FON Access Point mark. Unfortunately, for the time being, only 11,632 appear on the FON Maps. At the same time, we have 92,398 registered users, of which only 44,315 appear on our Maps. This is because we haven’t been pushy, asking each and every Fonero repeatedly to give us their name, age, and rank. Hopefully, as time goes by, more and more of the members of our Community will share their locations details in a way that will make our Maps more accurate and easier for everyone to use WiFi everywhere.

All in all, we think it is really cool that Foneros can connect to the Internet around the world in over one hundred countries using their WiFi. And even cooler, all of this started less than a year ago by a bunch of freakies in the outskirts of Madrid. We know that Foneros haven’t always had it easy. So, we’ve just launched La Fonera, the new FON Social router that is almost "plug and play" and can be set up in just a few minutes. Also, we think we are the only company in the world that is offering such an amazing product, La Fonera, for only $5 or €5.

FON is growing its Community of Foneros at an amazing rate, and we are trying to grow the FON team quick enough to support all of the new members. As a matter of fact, Martin has not had a siesta in the last 6 months. So, please, help, send us your CV, and join the team!
