- Will Franken- Man of 1000 Voices?

Will Franken is a hot one man show/comedian from San Francisco who has recently entered the world of podcasting.
His show is called-
Things We Did Before Reality
You might recall I tried doing an audio drama a while back with me providing all the voices. I didn't think it could be done sucessfully but Will has proved me wrong.
This highly talented guy not only writes extremely clever absurdist satire but performs all the characters himself. Men, women, old, young, foreign accents- Will does them all with enough skill to make you forget it's all coming from one just one man.
But the thing that impresses me most about the 6 podcasts that Will Franken has produced so far is the level of sophistication he uses to combine the dialog, music & sound effects plus the amazing ways he comes up with to transition one idea to another.
If you want to hear some cutting edge samples of modern audio comedy, click on the above links and check out Will's stuff now!
PS- One word of caution!
As Rob Avila of the San Francisco Bay Guardian said of Will-
"The easily offended will not be disappointed."
Mr. Franken's material is definately NOT politically correct.
I think he takes delight making fun of our PC society and using harsh language at times to make some of his points.
If biting, Lenny Bruce-style satire is offensive to you, I'd recommend sticking with Bill Cosby.

- Skype Me!

Last week I bought a Logitech USB headset (stereo headphones w/mic $39) to use for my audio production work. I heard you get better sound out of the USB ports and so far it seems to be true. This product came with a free offer from Skype for an hour of Skypeout minutes plus a months worth of Skype voice mail.
When I went to skype.com to download the FREE software I discovered something cool. Here's a quote from their web site-
Free calling within the US and Canada. But remember, you can make free calls within the US and Canada to
both landlines and mobile phones until the end of the year. It’s really
easy; there are no contract fees, no line rentals. All you need is
Skype and a phone number you want to call.
I quess I can save my hour of Skypeout minutes until next year because for 2006 it's ALL FREE! I've tested it out by calling my friends & relatives from California to Florida on their normal phone numbers and it really works!
My name on Skype is vixaudioshow. Feel free to call me if you see me online or leave a voice mail. If I get enough messages I might extend my Skype voice mail for a year. Lots of podcasters use Skype to keep in touch with their listeners and for doing interviews with non-local folks. I'm excited that such a powerful technology is available to all and is free to use.

- Audio Addicts, Willamette, & Dr. Squid
On the Yahoo group, Modern Audio Drama, people have been commenting on the Vix Audio Show podcast and the Blog-

Dani of the Society of Audio Addicts had this to say-
Jesse at SFF had the right idea, I have posted about your great
podcast on my blog too! Excellent addition to the podcasting/audio world!
If I could be so bold as to suggest you get your podcast feed on a
couple other directories other than iTunes, that way even more can
enjoy this awesome show! Or at least have the podcast feed available,
for all of those who do not succumb to the mighty Jobs. ;-)
I have a list of directory links on the Addict Blog!
GREAT work! Everyone should know about this one!

Have you been to Vix?
Well I am there now! Your host, Victor Gates, is quite hospitable and always has cold beer!
OK, I don't know if he has
cold beer, but I do know he has a GREAT opening theme, and wonderful
interviews with those who have brought (and are bringing) innovative
audio to your addictive ears. It's the first podcast after a year
hiatus, and I'm wishing I had known about this a year ago!
The sound of this podcast is awesome! Amazing quality!
I'm listening to his latest episode now, which talks about the old (well if you consider 1984 old) NPR show Bradbury 13, and have subscribed to the podcast so I can hear the rest!
Great show Vic!
Be sure to visit the Society of Audio Addicts for lots of cool audio info.
Just to put Dani's mind at ease, I do have Vix Audio Show listed on a few other Podcast Directories besides iTunes-
Podcasting News Podcast Directory
Podcast Alley

I think a lot of these directories have some sort of automated RRS feed
thing going where they snag your show the minute your publish the feed.

Sam A. Mowry of the Willamette Radio Workshop said this about the bonus material-
Wow, your bonus tracks are tremendous. I loved all the info and links
concerning Paul Frees. Great work and thanks for sharing.

- SFF Audio & Colonial Radio Theater

Jesse Willis of SFFaudio.com was kind enough to plug my show on his great web site and also offer a source for buying new copies of the Bradbury 13 radio series. Here's what he had to say-
Victor, the host and creator of the Vix Audio Show podcast, has
just relaunched his show after a year of letting it lie fallow. The new
episode (#5) features an interview with sound designer Michael McDonough - who if you didn't know - and shame on you if you didn't - is responsible for the famous 1984 broadcast NPR series known plainly as the "Bradbury 13". The podcast also features a few clips from the most popular installment in the series: A Sound Of Thunder.
In my opinion, Michael McDonough's series has the best radio dramatized
adaptations of Ray Bradbury stories, if not some of the best audio
dramatizations of Science Fiction in general.
Incidently.... [CUE
CHEESY COMMERICAL MUSIC] Though the series Victor is talking about is
out of print, I still have BRAND NEW, STILL SEALED stock from the
Durkin Hayes 1990s audiobook releases of the "Bradbury 13."
A complete set, 12 of the 13 shows on 6 individual cassettes, is $70.00
USD. This set is 100% legitimate, unplayed, and official. (This series
is NOT PUBLIC DOMAIN folks.) Send me an email if you're interested in a set. [/END COMMERICAL]
If you love Science Fiction/Fantasy in audio format be sure to visit SFFaudio.com. There is a wealth of good information there.

Mark VanderBerg from The Colonial Radio Theater had been emailing me about an exciting NEW audio production they just finished based on Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine. Here are a couple-
Victor,
As an FYI, The Colonial Radio Theatre on the Air
has just completed a collaboration with Ray Bradbury
to bring his classic book "Dandelion Wine" to the
radio drama community. More info at -
http://www.colonialradio.com
Being Bradbury and being a
new audio production this is news...and it looks a if
it will get very wide distribution at retail for the
holidays. This might be something you could use.
Mark VanderBerg
Executive Producer
Victor,
The program will be available sometime in November
from Blackstone Audio. They get very good retail and
Internet distribution, and we will also have links on
our website-
http://www.colonialradio.com
You may use clips on your show.
We just got an email from Ray Bradbury indicating
that he very much liked the program. As such, we will
likely produce others. It is all very exciting.
Take Care,
Mark
That IS exciting news Mark! I will include a sound clip from this CRT production on my next Vix Audio Show podcast.
Thanks again to SFFaudio & CRT.
I'm always happy to pass along cool information like this.

- Bernard Herrmann & Paul Frees BONUS MATERIAL!
One of the things I
really love about watching movies on DVDs are the special features or
bonus material. I know for the normal movie watcher sometimes this
extra stuff can be boring. But for the hardcore fan there can never be
too much information especially on a favorite film.
While I
was editing my interview with Bradbury 13 creator Michael McDonough, I
had to cut out a lot of stuff for the sake of time and to keep the
interview on the main topic. One side story was Michael being a big fan
film composer Bernard Herrmann and how he was in Los Angeles when
Herrmann died and was able to attend his funeral. The photo below shows
just a few of the great movies Bernard Herrmann composed music for.

Here's the MP3 file of Michael McDonough talking about Bernard Herrmann-
Herrmann.mp3
Another part that got cut out was how McDonough got world famous voice actor Paul Frees to do the narration for Bradbury 13.

Here's the full story- Frees.mp3

And here is the Paul Frees DEMO that Michael reffered to-
FreesDemo.mp3
Hope you enjoyed these little extras.
Stay tuned for the next episode of Vix Audio Show!

PS- Just a couple technical notes-
I
have discovered that the new Mac OS X versions of the FTP programs
CYBERDUCK & FETCH will work with AOL when it comes to uploading
files to your AOL web space. The log on is the same as before-
FTP ADDRESS- members.aol.com
USER NAME- ftp or anonymous
PASSWORD- "your AOL screen name"@aol.com
REMEMBER you HAVE to be logged onto AOL or it won't work!
Also-
I have removed all the old Super Cool Magaines For Sale files from my
web space to make room for the new stuff. So when you click on the old
links they don't work.

- Vix Audio Show #5 Bradbury 13 -A New Begining!
It's been a year since the last episode of Vix Audio Show. A lot has happened since then. I was able to do a little G4 upgrade on my old iMac so now I'm able to play around with programs like Garage Band without crashing too many times. My workload has let up too so now I have more time to experiment and try to improve on the production values of this podcast. I hope you'll enjoy the new format of show number 5 which features one of the milestones in radio drama- Bradbury 13. Stay tuned for more fun!

- VAS #1 John Carpenter Interview Sound Upgrade!
When Michael Geoghegan of Reel Reviews
listened to my 1977 interview with John Carpenter, I think his poor
audiophile ears couldn't take all the tape hiss and backround noise
that was on that old cassette tape. He asked if he could play around
with the original recording and see if he could reduce the background
noise and bring up the quality of the voices. It wasn't possible to remove 100% of the noise, but I thought he did such a
nice job that I have replaced the old interview with Michael's
cleaned-up new version. I also made the MP3 mono this time so it's a
smaller file download!

To listen to Michael's Reel Review of the original Assault On Precinct 13- CLICK HERE.
To listen to Vix Audio Show #1 with the new improved John Carpenter interview CLICK HERE.
I'd like to thank Michael again for his help. Be sure to check out his other Reel Review Podcasts for more cool films worth watching!
