- Lifelover - "I Love To Hurt You"

Stockholm's Lifelover aren't your typical black metal band. Their music is as menacing and depraved as anything you'd expect from Scandinavia, but the band's desire to eschew any sort of categorisation allows the five-piece to appeal to unlikely listeners - like me, for example.

- Da Bears - "The World Famous Da Bears"

When you read this band’s name, the first instinct is to yell it out, SNL-style. We all wanna do it, there’s no fighting it. I’m not sure if the proper pronunciation is to actually yell it out, but they should introduce some sort of mandatory policy.

- A Place to Bury Strangers - "To Fix The Gash In Your Head"

The first thing to know when you’re listening to Brooklyn’s A Place to Bury Strangers is that your speakers are fine. That strange hissing noise leaking out of them — y’know, the one giving you Tinnitus — is the band assaulting your speakers with a volume that has been known to destroy small woodland animals. (Be smart and make sure you don’t use them to test your new stereo or those woofers of yours will detonate Marty McFly style.)

- Janelle Monáe - "Violet Stars Happy Hunting"

Ms. Monáe is nutty enough to speak to the freaks, melodic enough to grab the ears of radio, and inventive enough to lure drool-stained, handwritten requests by everyone from Timbaland to Diplo to DFA.

- Glass Candy - Demos

Led by the breath of the stunning Ida No, producer Johnny Jewel has ditched the grating noise of 2003’s Love Love Love for something much more sensual: lush ’70s Italian soundtracks for the ’80s discotheque. This is love making music for dudes who wear neck bandanas and the gals who love them.

- Spank Rock & Benny Blanco - "Shake That"

Um… classy. The artwork may leave something, okay, everything to be desired, but a little context helps the blatant sexism go down a little smoother. This is MC Spank Rock’s tribute to 2 Live Crew. (That alone ought to do it for most people.)

- Honeydrips - "Fall From A Height (The Field

Another day, another fine act rears its beautiful head out of Sweden. The Honeydrips is essentially Mikael Carlsson, who once spent time in the now defunct Dorotea (ring any bells?). Now he's signed to the Tough Alliance's Sincerely Yours label, who recently birthed his stunning album Here Comes the Future.

- Acorn - "The Flood Pt. 1"

They waste little space, throwing a rhythmic jolt into a circle of roving guitar passages, ukulele flares, tribal chants with sonic adjustments that'll have your ears thinking they actually climbed the walls whilst recording this.

- Heartsrevolution - "Choose Your Own Adventure (C.

Much like their pals Crystal Castles, Heartsrevolution intensify the distortion in their electro; but unlike the more abrasive Crystal Castles, they know to keep their songs sweet like the candy they push driving from city to city.

- Dog Day - "Bullet"

They sound like a power pop group possessed by the demon spirits of the early '90s East coast music scene, and I bet - seriously now - that they actually listen to their copy of Daydream Nation backwards (they even mention Satan in "Career Suicide" so they must!).

- Unklejam - "What Am I Fighting For?"

Move over OutKast. Anyone who thought Dre and Big Boi were all about the flash and the Clinton-worship, well, there is another – and they’re even weirder. Unklejam’s Tyson “Tendai” Speede, Bobby Joel Stearns and yes, Adonistar are about to take R&B to the next level.

- Miami Horror - "Don't Be On With Her"

While this current '80s revival has seen its share of impressive throwbacks, perhaps no artist has made as much of a convincing argument for their love of the decade as Miami Horror.

- Hives - "Tick Tick Boom"

It's been three years since we last heard from the Hives and now they finally resurface on their own (after that insufferable collaboration with Timbaland and with an opening slot for Maroon 5).

- Kraftwerk - "Aerodynamik (Hot Chip's Intel

What a project! Last year's most vibrant pop group are asked to transform material by the living legends of electronic music. Upon first mention, the possibilities were endless and exciting... but the results may not be what you'd expect.

- Sunparlour Players - "If the Creeks Don't Rise"

Self-described as a "rabid tractor screaming towards a tent revival," Toronto's Sunparlour Players are all that and then some with a passion that can find them leading a rabid "hallelujah!" one minute and a bedtime lullaby the next.
