The Secret Strategies Behind Many “Viral” Videos-Dan Ackerman Greenberg

Have you ever watched a video with 100,000 views on YouTube and thought to yourself: “How the hell did that video get so many views?” Chances are pretty good that this didn’t happen naturally, but rather that some company worked hard to make it happen – some company like mine.

When most people talk about “viral videos,” they’re usually referring to videos like Miss Teen South Carolina, Smirnoff’s Tea Partay music video, the Sony Bravia ads, Soulja Boy – videos that have traveled all around the internet and been posted on YouTube, MySpace, Google Video, Facebook, Digg, blogs, etc. – videos with millions and millions of views.

Facebook backlash over sale of personal data

Growing unrest among the users of social networking website members could turn into a full-blown rebellion as they demand greater control over the way their personal information is marketed in cyberspace.

Following weeks of discontent on group discussion boards on Facebook, one of world’s biggest internet sites, it is facing a privacy backlash organised by the US-based online democracy watchdog, MoveOn.

Thousands of American Facebook members have signed a petition calling on the website to remove a new advertising program called Facebook Beacon, which can be used to track the spending habits of Facebook users on external websites.

Studies showh online holiday spending uncertain

November 22, 2007 (IDG News Service)—Researchers at comScore are expecting a solid online shopping season, but another research group isn’t so sure.

For the first 18 days of November, comScore reported more than $7 billion in online retail spending. That’s up 17% over the same period last year, which brought in $6 billion. The growth happened even though the first week or so of the month showed only modest gains compared with the year earlier. Roughly the last half of the period studied grew by more than 20% compared with last November, comScore found.

ComScore is predicting that shoppers will spend $29.5 billion during the months of November and December this year. That would be a 20% increase over last year, which brought in $24.6 billion.

However, another researcher is warning that online spending might not reach the growth levels seen in recent years. A study conducted by Nielsen Online found that shoppers expect to spend the same portion of their holiday budget online as they did in 2006.

WASHINGTON (AP)—Sure, instant messaging is fast and efficient. For many teenagers, it’s also a great way to avoid those OMG moments – that’s “omigod” – of mortifying face-to-face confrontations.

More than four in 10 teens, or 43 percent, who instant message use it for things they wouldn’t say in person, according to an Associated Press-AOL poll released Thursday. Twenty-two percent use IMs to ask people out on dates or accept them, and 13 percent use them to break up.

Amazon to launch Kindle e-book reader on Monday? Picture is on the link provided in today’s liner notes

At this point we’ve heard so many predicted launch dates for Amazon’s Kindle ebook reader we’re a little jaded about the whole thing, but CNET is reporting that their always-reliable “industry sources” have confirmed a Monday launch for the device and service. The specs will apparently remain consistent with what we’ve been hearing for so long now—$399, 6-inch screen, no integrated backlight, WIFi, EV-DO on Sprint for OTA book purchases, and a big ol’ dose of the ugly—but rumors are rumors, so don’t get too mopey if Monday comes and goes with no announcement.

Web Videos Stealing TV Viewers, and Marketers

WHY are fewer viewers watching the new fall television series? Perhaps because they are too busy watching video online.

As broadband service becomes more available at home, the growing prevalence of video programming on the Internet is catching the attention of consumers — not to mention marketers and media companies.

“Video has been liberated” from the TV set, Beth Comstock, president for integrated media at NBC Universal, said last week at a panel at the Ad:Tech conference in New York.

YouTube will do higher quality, not HD

YouTube is planning to upgrade the quality of its videos within the next three months, but it will not be high-definition video.

The social video company has been testing higher quality video, but it does not want to alienate its traditional users with long load times. YouTube provides content to everyone, co-founder Steve Chen said at the NewTeeVee conference.

Other sites had incorrectly reported that Chen was referring to high definition. One of the moderators of the panel at the NewTeeVee Conference where he revealed his upcoming plans for YouTube cleared the air.

“What I got out of [Chen’s] comments was that YouTube’s first priority is making sure everyone, everywhere, on any device, could view every video on the site. Steve actually said himself, as the commenters above are saying, that HD really doesn’t make sense for the short, silly clips that are YouTube’s bread and butter,” Liz Gannes wrote to AlleyInsider.

Increasingly, new techniques and technologies must be incorporated to ensure smooth operations, rapid resolution of problems, and that ever-more stringent service level agreements are met.

YouTube Increases Upload Limits, Provides Batch Uploader

YouTube announced yesterday that it had increased the size limit for videos to 1 GB, and also introduced new software that allows users to simultaneously upload multiple videos.

Users may still opt to upload their videos to the site through the browser form if they do not wish to put a piece of YouTube software on their hard drives, or in the case of Mac users, if the software isn’t supported at all.

If you’ve ever watched a feature film on YouTube, you know that files are broken up into increments and compressed severely. The new multi-upload application seems ideally suited for the purpose of putting such longer-form media on the site. By also increasing the potential file size, it will likely means that compression will be less of a detriment to picture quality.

    Online Advertising Dollars Soaring

The amount of money spent in the US on online advertising will nearly double in the next four years, going from $21.4 billion in 2007 to $42 billion in 2011, according to a report by eMarketer. This represents an increase from a 7.4% share of total media in 2007, to a 13.3% share in 2011. In roughly the same period, online spending will nearly triple, rising from $16.9 billion in 2006 to $42 billion in 2011.

According to David Hallerman, eMarketer Senior Analyst and author of the new report US Advertising Spending, these four milestones mark the change:

“First, US Internet ad spending surpassed $5 billion in Q2 2007, the largest sum recorded in any quarter according to research from the Interactive Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers.”

Advertisements in Web videos seen missing mark

November 09, 2007 (Reuters)—Companies are rushing to serve up advertisements with online videos, but that doesn’t mean anybody is paying attention to the promotions for cars, soap or sneakers.

Although increasingly widespread, the short commercial spots that run before videos—everything from entertainment clips to news spots—may do as much harm as good, according to media experts. Studies show the commercials, known as prerolls, often irritate consumers, thus raising the risk they’ll ignore the promotion or click to another Web site altogether.

It’s really frustrating to watch 15- or 30-second of advertising before you get to see the video,” she said.

In one alternative, Google is offering an ad-supported video service known as “video units,” which runs relevant banners along the top of the video and text ads along the bottom. It’s considered a less invasive way of showing the audience an advertisement.

Other alternatives could include anything from sponsorship to product placement. Yet another possibility would be to rely on subscriptions rather than advertising.

But few believe consumers are willing to pay subscriptions, after getting so much content for free until now.

Microsoft thinks it has found the right price for its enterprise search tool: free.

Starting next year, the company plans to give away a new product, dubbed Microsoft Search Server 2008 Express, which enables workers to see a collection of search results spanning databases, internal computer systems, and the Internet. In addition to the free product, Microsoft plans a paid version that is essentially the same, but is licensed to run on more than one physical server. Microsoft said it will announce pricing for that product closer to its launch next year.

Vinyl May Be Final Nail in CD’s Coffin

As counterintuitive as it may seem in this age of iPods and digital downloads, vinyl—the favorite physical format of indie music collectors and audiophiles—is poised to re-enter the mainstream, or at least become a major tributary.

Talk to almost anyone in the music business’ vital indie and DJ scenes and you’ll encounter a uniformly optimistic picture of the vinyl market.

“I’m hearing from labels and distributors that vinyl is way up,” said Ian Connelly, client relations manager of independent distributor alliance IODA, in an e-mail interview. “And not just the boutique, limited-edition colored vinyl that Jesu/Isis-style fans are hot for right now.”

OpenSocial opens new can of worms

When Google announced that its new social-networking initiative would extend to any site that wanted to participate, the land grab for the social Web’s attention just got a whole lot more intense.

In a move that was anticipated for weeks, Google has unveiled a set of application program interfaces (APIs) that allow third-party programmers to build widgets that take advantage of personal data and profile connections on a social networking site. But instead of limiting the project to its own social-networking property, Orkut, Google has invited other sites along for the ride—including LinkedIn, Hi5, Plaxo, Ning, and Friendster.

The initiative, appropriately, is called “OpenSocial.”

      Defining Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the practice of guiding the development of a Web site so that it will naturally attract visitors by winning top ranking on the major search engines for selected keyword phrases. That’s a long and rather complicated sentence, and yet it hardly begins to define search engine optimization.

It doesn’t address the fact that most often, search engine optimization consultants (SEOs) are not invited to participate in a project until after the Web site is completed and launched, and are therefore not “guiding the development” of the Web site. Rather, SEOs most often are called upon to rehabilitate an existing Web site, usually after it is determined that a competitor is ranking higher in search engine results.

    Passionistas on the Internet

Consumers who are passionate about their interests spend a lot of time online keeping up to date, according to Yahoo! and MediaVest’s “Passionistas: The New Empowered Consumers” study. These consumers spend six minutes online for every one minute spent with the same content by most Internet users. The Yahoo!-MediaVest study also found that such consumers were favorable toward brands associated with their interests. “If you observe the natural behavior of passionate people as a brand marketer you can take advantage of their behavior toward others,” Edwin Wong, director of the consumer insights organization at Yahoo! Mr. Wong said passionate people were naturally predisposed to spread not only the word about their interests but also the associated brands.

Data De-Dupe University: Five Important Considerations for Evaluating Disk-based Backup Solutions with Data De-Duplication October 9, 2007

Many vendors have jumped on the data deduplication band-wagon because dealing with rapid data growth is a fact of life for IT departments. Organizations of all sizes are facing the dilemma of how to backup increasing amounts of data while reducing their reliance on traditional tape-based systems. Now that disk-based backup with data deduplication technology makes disk-based solutions about the same price as tape, there is even more interest and vendor hype. With all the noise how do you ensure that the disk-based backup system you choose grows easily as your data grows? The scalability of the disk-based backup system and its core architectural underpinnings must be carefully considered.

Adobe announced the availability of its long-awaited media player at Adobe MAX 2007 in Chicago. By Tim Siglin October 1, 2007

In Chicago, Monday, two important events took place. A rally to spur the Cubs on in their quest for the pennant took place at Daley Plaza at noon. A few hours before that, though, at Adobe MAX 2007 in the McCormick Place convention center, the company announced availability of the first beta of its long-awaited desktop video player--the Adobe Media Player.

During a presentation at MAX, Adobe's worldwide users group meeting, the company showed off the media player, called AMP, and noted that it's immediately available in pre-release form at labs.adobe.com. This version does not, according to AMP product manager Deeje Cooley, include the underlying technology from the upcoming "Moviestar" Flash player. AMP will play traditional Flash video files,"

Get Internet TV through Windows Media Center

US users can now access over 100 hours of television content through Microsoft's new service, Internet TV. Lunched as a direct competitor to services like Joost, where users can watch online content for free on their PC, Internet TV aims to bring the service into the living room. Internet TV is available to US customers through Windows Update, and is listed as a service in Windows Media Center. This means that users will be able to stream the on-demand content to their TV using a media extender such as the Xbox 360, giving Internet TV an advantage over Joost. So far Microsoft has secured music concerts, movie trailers and full episodes of the excellent US series 'Arrested Development.' High-definition content will also be a prominent feature of the new service.

The beta is available for download now, but unfortunately for the non-US world, there is no word on international release.

Tiny Tin Whiskers Endanger Electronics By JORDAN ROBERTSON, Fri Oct 5, 1:20 PM ET

SAN JOSE, Calif. - They've ruined missiles, silenced communications satellites and forced nuclear power plants to shut down. Pacemakers, consumer gadgets and even a critical part of a space shuttle have fallen victim.

The culprits? Tiny splinters - whiskers, they're called - that sprout without warning from tin solder and finishes deep inside electronics. By some estimates, the resulting short-circuits have leveled as much as $10 billion in damage since they were first noticed in the 1940s.

Now some electronics makers worry the destruction will be more widespread, and the dollar amounts more draining, as the European Union and governments around the world enact laws to eliminate the best-known defense - lead - from electronic devices.
