  • Trail Jockey
At the beginning of each new design project I am reminded of how my job is essentially turning intangible concepts into actual, visible things like websites, ads, and videos. This is, of course, much easier typed than done. Years ago as an entry-level intern, I once asked my wordsmith sensei where he goes for creative ideas. He shifted his eyes around the room, rolled them back into his head, and then exhaled in his best sage-whisper, “Creativity comes from Inspiration, and Inspiration comes from some rundown Warehouse in Jersey.”

  • The Aluminum Horse: Observations From The Field, Part I
The mangos were perfect that morning and the mud puddle I was drinking was especially sweet. Father interrupted my breakfast and suggested I trot up to the trailhead and check it out. A group of people was gathering and they were riding crazy horses! My hobby is studying human behavior, so I galloped to the top of the hill and saw an amazing sight: six humans riding atop six colorful not-quite-horses. Each not-quite-a-horse had two big wheels with knobby tires instead of legs (strange!) and was made of the hard, shiny material that lines our black trails that Father calls Coor’s Light.

  • The Last Hurrah
The River of Doubt, by Candice Millard, is the true story of how one of the most popular United States presidents risked his life and those of others to put a nearly thousand mile tributary of the Amazon River on the map . The very day this book arrived in the mail, I stole it from its owner because I wanted to see how professional naturalists, who get books written about them, went about their jobs.

  • Vieques Ferry Schedule - Spring 07
Getting to Vieques by ferry boat is a relatively fast alternative to swimming, and more economical than chartering a submarine. Remember to arrive one hour prior to departure and even earlier if you are traveling on a holiday.

  • Vegetation to Drool Over
There is a trail on the east end of the Fish and Wildlife Refuge where the vegetation makes me drool. I only realized this when a forester friend mentioned drooling over a plant diverse area on his side of Vieques. I myself had wondered if perhaps my trail could be a pocket of native vegetation, mysteriously unaffected by the invasive thorn scrub that blankets the interior.

  • Climbing Caracas
I spotted my first of this season’s monarch butterflies solving its own navigation problem thru the milk cactus on the old military air strip approaching Playa Caracas on Vieques Island.

  • Marine Life Tank Talks
The Vieques Conservation Historical Trust on the boardwalk in Esperanza is one of the few places on the island where you can see living plants and animals from two different ecosystems without getting your shoes muddy.

  • Fire Up Your Imagination at the Puerto Ferro Lighthouse
On the south shore of Vieques, overlooking the tides entering the bay dually known as Baracuda or Puerto Ferro, sits a romantic, abandoned lighthouse. Though technically off-limits to the public, I biked up the dirt trail on an overcast evening to take in the display caused by a storm passing in the Atlantic of six to ten foot waves breaking against the limestone rocks.
