- Looking Back - Part Deux
By now weve had about four spring training games on SNY, and the first round of cuts will be happening soon. After this column we close the book on 2006 for good and focus on 2007. They say those who dont learn from history are doomed to repeat it. I have no idea who they are. . . but they always sounded pretty smart to me. So let us continue our look at the season that was 2006, a season of drama, excitement, and a mustache on our second baseman that would make Ron Jeremy blush. We pick up the action in .........

- Yanks Get Off To Good Start
Put the champagne on ice. Well, maybe thats a bit much. But after a 4-0 first week to the 2007 Spring Training season, I cant help but be a little optimistic. The Yankees opened the season in grand style on Thursday, as Johnny Damon hit a lead-off homerun in their game against the Twins and never looked back, as they cruised to a 6-1 victory. They followed with three more consecutive wins, against Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia. The offense has not shown any signs of slowing since .........

- Mets looking Good
Wednesday Feb 28th: Tigers - 5 Mets- 4
Spring opener sees the Mets late rally fall short. Oliver Perez (0-1) disappoints with a rough two inning outing (5 hits, 4 run, 1 homer). New acquisitions Ben Johnson (two hits) and David Newhan (2 RBIs) steal the offensive show. Julio Franco drives in two with his 8th inning single. Omar Infante and Marcus Thames each had two hits for Detroit. Ryan Raburn homered. Chad Durbin (1-0) gets the victory with two scoreless innings.

- Oliver Twist
Could an ill-fated cab ride be the key to correcting a disastrous trade and giving the Mets a future ace? On the night of July 30th Duaner Sanchez got into a cab and came out with a season ending separated shoulder injury. In response to that deal, Omar Minaya acquired Roberto Hernandez and left-handed enigma Oliver Perez for Xavier Nady. My first reaction that day was frustration over the freak injury, but then concern for what initially looked like a dubious deal. Hernandez was a shaky setup man, and Perez in Triple A, a total mess, and an ERA close to seven. After further review, helped by his Game 7 outing, that cab ride could change the course of Mets history. Here is my big question: Could Oliver Perez make Mets fans forget Scott Kazmir?

- Instant Karma
Like most Mets fans stuck in an office, I depend on Metsblog to get me through my day. Whether its reading the latest news and rumors, or visiting the various sites Matt Cerrone has graciously added, the website is my defense against the monotony of work. Of course what I dont expect is to be aggravated at 9:24am on a Tuesday morning because of what I read on the site. No, the Mets didnt make a dumb trade, nor did Brett Myers make another brain dead statement. ...........

- Bronx Bullpen - Best It's Been
Its been a while since you could sit there in the sixth or seventh inning with Joe Torre coming to the mound to take out the starter and feel comfortable with the person coming through the bullpen door. That uneasiness in the stomach that came with Bob Sheppard introducing Paul Quantrill or Tom Gordon no longer exists, and the 2007 New York Yankees bullpen is capable of creating fear around the league. Mariano Rivera is the obvious closer and the Yankee Stadium crowd will get to enjoy Enter Sandman in the bottom of the ninth for at least one more season, and hopefully many more, if Brian Cashman doesnt Bernie Mo after 2007. He will get the ball with a lead more times than he has . .........

- Waving The Winter Goodbye
After an excruciating 10,895.87 baseball-free days (approximately...), during which time the Yankees managed to trade 2 starting pitchers, fire some coaches, watch a 3rd baseman bare his soul to the media for no discernible reason and drop the ball on one Japanese pitcher but sign another, Spring Training is at last upon us. The Yankees officially kick off the pre-season against the Twins at 1:15 EST tomorrow, and although the Yankees Chick will sadly not be in attendance...........

- Better Living Through Chemistry
Thanks to a fellow member of The Yankees Board, I recently read Kevin Kennedys column on the importance of team chemistry. His argument is quite simpleteam chemistry is overrated in baseball. The ensuing argument on The Yankees Board was quite entertaining, ranging from quoted articles found via Google search, to a curt fend for yourself comment. Anyway, all of this hilarity got me thinking. .........

- It's Finally Here! Let's look Back!
October 19, 2006... date which will live in infamy. Is that a little over the top? It doesnt seem like it to me, and probably a few thousand other Mets fans. Its been a little more than four months since we had to watch Yadier Molina leap into the Queens night, to be engulfed by a sea of red and gray. A third of a year has passed to try and ease the pain of a wasted opportunity. Whomever came up with the statement time heals all wounds obviously wasnt a baseball fan. Hell, I know a Yankees fan who hasnt gotten. .........

- Lastings Dilemma
The irony for the Mets during the first days of spring training was that the starting pitching did not dominate sports talk. Alas the man of the hour quickly became second year phenom Lastings Milledge. Although Lastings has spoken loudly but carried a very small stick during his short time in the big leagues, he continues to remain a dilemma for the Mets front office.
Do you remember the last player to come on the scene with such a splash? It was during the spring of 1983 that Darryl Strawberry burst onto the baseball landscape and began a new era of Mets baseball. Could it be possible that the Mets could take a history lesson from that time and use it to prevent ...........
