- Sailing crew for profit or not?
There seems to be a growing trend in cruising circles for owners seeking crew, to want payment. I understand the call for skippers to be compensated for food, but I wonder about the ethic in asking for expenses to cover boat costs which would be there irrespective of the presence of crew. I am also concerned about the legal requirements of a skipper who charges crew to be aboard. How does it alter his/her legal responsibility? I understand the differences between 'charter' and 'share expenses', but in any case brought before a court, where would the owner/skipper stand?

- An estimate of the number of cruising yachts sailing worldwide?
I did some research with the help of Diona Cornell several years ago, just to try and get a rough feel for the number of yachts sailing the major ocean legs around the world. Not only were the numbers gross estimates but it's hard to know how 'gross' they were .......

- Drogues and sea-anchors for sailing yachts?
[Link] Can anyone guide me to a good online reference on sea anchors for sailing yachts - when deploying a sea anchor is it necessary to vary the amount of rode one pays out according to how short/steep the seas are? i.e. Distance between consecutive crests/crest and trough of each wave? What is the difference between a drogue and a sea anchor?

- Self steering on a sailing yacht?
[Link] I am thinking of building my own self steering for my small, double ended sailing yacht Nausikaa. She is 7.6m l.o.a. To be honest, I have looked at what is commercially available and break out in a cold sweat when I see prices of about US $ 2,400 and upwards for some stainless steel piping and some plastic "widgits". I have therefore looked at building my own and come to the conclusion that Sir Francis Chichester's MIRANDA type of gear could be built relatively easily. It also has the advantage that there are no 'extra bits' in the water making it more accessible and reducing drag.

- Sailing yacht MOQUINI missing in the Indian Ocean.
[Link] A private initiative has been launched to conduct a specialised search effort using two private aircraft capable of sustained air time and suitable for the job to search for the sailing yacht MOQUINI which went missing during the Mauritius to Durban yacht race. The idea is to operate two aircraft for a week, to a detailed Grid Pattern provided by recognised yachtsmen who are world class navigators and who have experience in plotting drift patterns, and routing. As you can imagine, this kind of operation takes an enormous amount of money, and we ask that you consider donating to a fund set up just for this purpose. All monies shall be managed by the Trustees in conjunction with the S & R Committee....
