The New England Patriots did not designate Randy Moss as a franchise player Thursday, but there was no word from the team on whether they had reached a contract agreement with the wide receiver or are allowing him to become a free agent. Cleveland Browns running back Jamal Lewis (31) is tackled by Cincinnati Bengals defenders Johnathan Joseph, left, and Dhani Jones, right, in the second half of an NFL football game in Cincinnati, in this Dec. 23, 2007 file photo. Lewis has agreed with the Cleveland Browns on a multiyear contract, The Associated Press has learned.

Running back Jamal Lewis has agreed to terms on a three-year contract to stay with the Cleveland Browns. Lewis was to become an unrestricted free agent next week. The Carolina Panthers released starting running back DeShaun Foster on Thursday, a move that clears salary-cap space and opens the door for DeAngelo Williams to become the team's featured back. Foster, Carolina's second-round pick in 2002, never rushed for more than 897 yards in six seasons plagued by fumbles and injuries.

  • Seahawks put franchise tag on CB Trufant (AP)
The Seattle Seahawks officially made their initial move to keep Pro Bowl cornerback Marcus Trufant from free agency by designating him as their franchise player for 2008 on Thursday. The team announced that Trufant is still free to negotiate with any other team when free agency begins March 1. That means Seattle used the non-exclusive franchise tag, which allows the Seahawks to match any offer or...

  • Union files grievance on team debt limit (AP)
The NFL players' union filed a grievance against the league Thursday, charging the owners colluded by reducing the debt ceiling for every team by 20 percent. The union said the reduction coincides with what in 2010 could be a year without a salary cap. The filing is the latest discord between the league and the NFL Players Association over the contract extension agreed to in March 2006.
