- Push comes to shove and the Phils get pushed back to under .500ville, where they might want to at least consider renting an apartment or something
Yet another wild one with the Marlins as tempers flared and the Phillies faltered. The Phils just couldn't get the big hit they needed late in the game and the Marlins finally did, a blast high off the wall in the bottom of the eleventh that gave the Fish a win and the series.

- Vicious epidemic of brain-lock sweeps through Phillies, injuring one
Brett Myers started the ninth inning of a game the Phillies were winning by four runs last night. He didn't finish it. Four hits, a walk, a hit batter, and two of the worst decisions you'll ever see on a baseball field later, the game was tied and the Marlins had runners on first and second with two down. Myers delivered a 1-0 pitch to Miguel Olivo that was wild and way wide and that was it. The former starter turned massively overused reliever was done. He left the game clutching the back of his upper-right arm.

- If you can get an out on one pitch, take it. Let the strikeouts come on the outstanding pitches. Winning is the big thing. If you throw a lot of pitches, before you know it, your arm is gone. (Dwight Gooden)
Cole Hamels has thrown a ton of pitches this season. Too many. But is that because he's striking so many out, or cause Manuel, terrified of his bullpen, leaves him in too long? The answer is, no doubt, a little of both with the emphasis on it's Manuel's fault and some I don't know sprinkled in. That in mind, wayward ho.

- Phils may be hoping to generate enough revenue consulting on how to get back to .500 to get a relief pitcher
The Phillies tried to get over .500 for the season for the third time in five games last night. 0-for-3. They are 5-0 in their last five games where they weren't trying to get over .500. 8-1 in their last nine games where they weren't trying to get over .500. Paging Dr Anyone for psych consult, please.

- With all due respect to Neil Young, I think we should at least consider letting those guys fade away
New year, same problem for the Phillies. They still can't stop people from scoring. And while it may seem that only the details have changed, this year the Phillies may be playing a risky new game with Cole Hamels and Brett Myers as they try to get into the mix at the top of the NL East.

- Phils may be hoping for a free relief pitcher if they can get .500 to stamp their card seven more times
The Phils won yesterday to hit the .500 mark again for the third time in five days. Another nice start for Adam Eaton, who has now strung three together. With the possible exception of token useable-reliever-in-the-pen-who-isn't-Brett-Myers Geoff Geary giving up three home runs in five batters in the eighth, everything went pretty much swimmingly

- Phils decide scoring runs is for the birds
The Phillies finished a distant second in their contest with the Blue Jays this evening. They got four hits and lost by eleven runs. Jamie Moyer got bombed, again hurt by the long ball. After allowing one home run through his first six starts he has allowed six his last three times out.

- Bird calls
Jon Lieber didn't need much help tonight but he got some from the umps. The Phillies got two big calls in the game. One came in the fifth inning on a 3-2 pitch to Lieber that opened the floodgates to a five-run inning and the other to end the game on a long stretch by Helms at first with the go-ahead run on base.

- Hit me, Gabe-y, one more time
The Phils did almost everything right in their four-game set with the high-flying Brewers. They got clutch hits, big innings and good pitching. What they couldn't do yesterday was get Gabe Gross out. The lefty hit two bombs off of Freddy Garcia and it helped Milwaukee come out of Philly with a win and dropped the Phils back below .500.

- They say nobody is perfect. Then they tell you practice makes perfect. I wish they'd make up their minds (Wilt Chamberlain)
You're going to have to wait if you want to see Cole Hamels throw a no-hitter or a perfect game. Probably not very long, though. Like he so often does, Hamels looked unhittable last night. He took a perfect game into the seventh inning on his way to pitching the Phillies back to .500.
