- Doug Spartz - The One Who's Leavin'
At the time of this review, Doug Spartz is sitting at #4 on
the Americana Music radio chart. I can tell you that this #4 makes some
industry folks very uneasy. For Doug, I
tend to think that he hasnt had anything easy when it comes to music though. This past November, Doug suffered a heart
attack which put his plans for this new album on hold. In February, he had yet another blow with the
discovery that he has Colon
cancer. His determination and will led
him right back to the studio to start work on this new CD The One Whos
Leavin. The project includes a stellar
cast of Americana
artists with Jay Boy Adams, Tom Gillam, Eilen Jewell, Billy Lee Riley, and
Sarah Jo Roark. Additional guest
musicians include Bruce Creeper Kurnow, Bobby Stinger Schnitzer, Cynthia
Johnson, Pamela McNeill, Billy Joe French and Gary Gazaway.

- AMA Announces Nominees
This morning, the Americana Music Association announced the nominees for this years Americana Music Awards. I am happy to see this years line-up (as it's pretty damn close to what I nominated). The Avett Brothers are getting some much deserved love. My man, Darrell Scott, gets a nod for best song of the year (although he should really be in the running for best album). Will Kimbrough Gurf also made the list for instrumentalist of the year. Amy Lavere Sunny Sweeney are up for the Emerging Artist award. All in all, it's a pretty good reflection of the past 12 months in Americana. Last year's nominations drew a lot of heat for a few suprises. Hopefully this year's AMA award show will reflect these nominees. The AMA Conference Awards show (http://www.americanamusic.org) will be held in late October this year for those that are interested in attending.

- Rex Moroux - Royal Street Inn
Sometimes an artist just seems to be trying so damn hard to make you believe. Voice straining, cellos and bending steel strings dont always add up to tears on Rex Morouxs Royal Street Inn. The record sounds so taped and measured that any improvisations are checked at the door.
