  • MPI Chicago Area Chapter Holiday Party a Huge Success

The MPI Chicago Area Chapter (MPI CAC) holiday party at Scoozi was a huge success with an unbelievable turnout with just under 400 attendees.  This party has become one of the largest parties in the Chicago area meetings industry.  In attendance were MPI members from hotels, cvb's, attractions, teambuilding companies, ground transportation companies, restaurants, tourist boards, meeting service providers, DMC's, event planners, meeting venues and students.  Members in attendance were also from Holiday Showcase which took place the day after the party.

As a member of MPI, Hereschicago.com was in attendance and brought a new member, Anthony George of Coach USA who networked with other members of MPI.  Anthony is a veteran in the travel industry and enjoys working with planners to coordinate any ground event or shuttle in Chicago.

In addition, Hereschicago.com brought a student, Gabrielle Duda who seeking to break in to the industry.  Gabrielle is currently taking her masters in Integrated Marketing Communication and is seeking a full time position in the meetings and events field.  Let me go on record now and say that she is going to be one of the newest stars to enter our industry.  In you are interested in this hidden gem for future employment, send Gabrielle an email.  You will be glad you did!

Enjoy the photos as much as we enjoyed taking them!

(L-R) Gabrielle Duda, Student and Craig Raughton, MPI CAC President Elect with One Smooth Stone.  Craig becomes the President of MPI CAC starting July 1, 2007 and is truly going to be one of the best MPI CAC has ever had! (next to Tracy Stein that is :-)

The Meetinghouse Companies supplied the decor which was fantastic!  The giving tree, raffle and silent auction this year was phenominal.  I can not say enough good things about the party this year.  Out of all of my years attending the MPI Holiday party, this one was one of the best!  Kudos to all of the volunteers of MPI for producing such a great event.  The MPI Holiday Party committee should be commended on such a great event!

  • Chicago's Convention and Tourism Industry Contributes $10 Billion Dollars for Local Economy

Chicago's Convention and Tourism Industry Contributes $10 Billion Dollars for Local Economy

Chicago) October 24, 2006- Chicago's hospitality leaders released 2005 economic impact figures today.  According to the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau (CCTB) and the Chicago Office of Tourism (COT), 33.04 million domestic and overseas travelers visited Chicago last year generating nearly $10 billion for the city of Chicago.  This is a 7 percent increase from 2004.

Domestic business and leisure travelers spent a total of $8.8 billion in direct expenditures, which includes transportation, lodging and entertainment.

Chicago visitors generated $3.8 billion in salary wages, which created nearly 129,000 industry jobs for Chicago residents.  Domestic and international spending also generated nearly $560 million in tax revenues for Chicago and Illinois governments, up 5.6 percent from 2004.

"Chicago continues to surpass national forecast in terms of visitor numbers and economic growth" said Tim Roby, CCTB President. "These strong numbers prove the positive effect Chicago's convention and tourism industry impacts the city and its economy."

Chicago saw healthy gains in domestic business travel with nearly 13.78 million business travelers visiting Chicago in 2005 which generated over $5 billion for the city of Chicago, a 7 percent increase from 2004. Business travel made up 60 percent of the city's total travel expenditures.

"These strong numbers reflect the record-breaking numbers our conventions have been seeing in recent years," said Roby.

On the leisure side, Chicago hosted 18 million leisure visitors.  These leisure visitors spent nearly $3.6 billion in direct expenditures, increasing spending by 6%.  Leisure visitor spending supported 46,000 jobs for area residents.

"Chicago's appeal as a family-friendly, culturally vibrant destination is growing both domestically and internationally," said Dorothy Coyle, Director of the Chicago Office of Tourism, "With our tremendous range of events and experiences, from free concerts in the Cultural Center, to ice skating and family programs at Millennium Park, as well as neighborhood theaters, restaurants and shops, it is easy to see why our leisure numbers continue to increase each year."

Added Roby, "Chicago's economic numbers look to increase in the next few years with the opening of the McCormick Place West Building, opening August 2007.  To date, we have 57 shows booked, which will generate an estimated $816 million in direct expenditures for the city of Chicago."

  • Marshall Field's, A Chicago Institution Is Replaced By Macy's

    Marshall Field’s: 1852 – 2006

Marshall Field’s, 154 years old and a Chicago institution, gone this week on the infamous State Street, that great street.  One of the world’s first department stores, placed only second in size to Macy’s, it’s new owner and label. Marshall Field’s was the premier shopping destination in Chicago for many years with the slogan “Give the lady what she wants.”

The store founded many retail firsts, including inventing the gift registry, incorporating restaurants into the shopping experience, hosting book signings, and offering credit to customers. It cultivated a reputation for style and exclusivity by creating separate men’s and women’s lounges and the designer 28 Shop.

Born in 1852 to Potter Palmer, it was first named P. Palmer & Co. It went through several name changes before being renamed for its adoptive father, Marshall Field, in 1881. The store opened at its State Street location in 1868. It burned to the ground twice (once during the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and later in 1877), and went through a few incarnations before 1907, when the current 12-story, block-wide store was completed. In its long life, it went through a series of affairs. It was first purchased by BATUS Retail Group in 1982, a union that lasted eight years, before it was sold to Dayton Hudson Corporation, later renamed Target Corporation. Its latter years were plagued by relationship troubles, with the store being sold twice in as many years. In 2004, a purchase by May Department Stores lasted just one year before Federated Department Stores, the parent company of Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, took over.

Other State Street neighbors Montgomery Ward, The Fair Store, Mandel Brothers, Wieboldt’s, and Goldblatt Bros., Inc., Another peer, Carson Pirie Scott, are not expected to e to see 2007.  Marshall Field’s will be remembered by the Walnut Room, the Great Clock, Frango mints, which will continue and remain in the new Macy’s.

The name change from Marshall Field’s to Macy’s becomes official on Sept. 9th at all area locations (111 N. State St., 835 N. Michigan Ave., Oakbrook Center, Woodfield Mall, Old Orchard Shopping Center), starting with a Welcome Shopping Party from noon to 4 p.m. Customers will be invited to check out the store with a ribbon cutting, live entertainment, refreshments, trunk shows, makeovers, and more. • The Truth About Trade Shows

Bored audiences, low returns How bad are trade shows? A new survey by transportation-services provider BostonCoach reveals 70 percent of attendees harbor some negative feelings about their experiences. From boring presentations to the hassle of travel, trade shows are getting low marks.

"The results of this survey have important implications for organizations staging events," says BostonCoach president and CEO Jonathan P. Danforth. "Producing a truly successful event requires focusing on activities and logistics that extend well beyond the show floor or a meeting room." Here's where trade shows fall short:

    * They are no fun. More than half of those in the survey said they were not stimulated or energized by events in or outside the meeting hall, and a great lineup of speakers was not enough.

    * There's little return on investment. It costs money to attend a show, from travel and registration to days away from the office. And 48 percent of trade-show attendees have negative feelings about the lack of value trade shows provide.

    * Travel is a drag. Thirty percent of attendees said they didn't like the hassle of air and ground travel, and didn't enjoy time away from home and the office.
